Ltd. Port Perry, Ontario Editorial Comment Budget fall out begins Just weeks after the release of federal finance minister Paul Martin's long-awaited | budget, the hens are coming home to roost. The minister warned in the weeks leading up to the document's release that it would be ruthless, and some if not all of us would be left smarting by its debt-chopping measures. Well: Here's the first slap. Word came this past week that the Agricultural employment Services office, which has served Scugog and its farming community for more than 20 years, will be dealt a hefty blow, to the tune of 35 per cent of its funding. And management says the office, which helps local farmers and job seekers come together and also provides a local link to Employment Canada job banks, will eventually close. Is this the kind of measure we wanted? Apparently. In the weeks and months before the budget it seems everyone across the country jumped onto the No New Taxes bandwagon, warning government that they are taxed to the eyeballs now and can't take any more. That's fine, and one would be hard pressed not to agree. But such budgetary measures come with a cost: Services to local communities are being cut, and will continue to be cut. It's part of the leaner, meaner government we have demanded, and now we will have to live with it, it seems. But one wonders: How much sense does it make to cut back on services providing employment opportunities at the local level, when there remain so many other questionable expenditures? We maintain that the cuts can occur elsewhere. And local farmers likely do too. J LE UE AA REE I= URIS ERX) FOOL SY " oS To the Editor: I am writing in regards to the Canterbury Common Development. As a local contractor, I would like to see this project get underway as soon as possible. I can't understand why the developers or the town- ship are playing with this golf course issue. If in this day and age of water conservation and green space conservation the developer wants to abandon the course, I feel the town- ship should jump on the opportunity of promot- ing local conservation. If they are worried PHOTO COURTESY SCUGOG SHORES MUSEUM about who is going to look after the green space, I would suggest that they either do it or hire local people to do it. Or even better, since this is an adult style community, why has no one thought or men- tioned that each resident in this area may be retired or professional persons? With this in mind, may I point out that some of these people may not want to or be able to look after their OWN green spaces. In many adult style communities this is TurntoPage9 REMEMBER 35YEARSAGO Thursday, April 27,1950 When Harold Avery was cleaning up a pile of scrap metal behind Mrs. Bolton's house on Perry Street he came across a bomb. Two inspectors investigated and found it to be a live smoke bomb, but that it had not been dropped from the air.
