On April 29, Port Perry Minor Hockey closed out its season with its Annual Awards Cere- mony and Banquet. Once again to encourage participation by the whole organization, the event was held at our arena. President Bill VanCamp wel- comed Mayor Howard Hall, Councillors Marilyn Pearce, Karen Puckrin and Doug Mof- fatt to share in our celebratory event. Our other special guest was Oshawa Generals Jr. A. player Jeff Andrews who played in our organization before mov- ing on to bigger things. The hockey afternoon fea- tured food for all, cotton candy (again this year thanks to Ken Koury of "Nuts About Choco- late") and a new "Minor Hockey Information Centre". A large and boisterous crowd was in at- tendance to say last farewells to team mates and coaches. A highlight of the event was the honouring of Past President Grant Laird, Past Vice- Presidents Dave and Wendy Bourgeois with "Life Member- ships". Executive member Pe- ter Christie gave us a reminder of Grant's contributions to Mi- nor Hockey over the years. Doug Scott, a highly respected "hockey man" in PPMHC over the years spoke highly of Dave and Wendy as well in recount- ing some of their diverse and numerous contributions both on and off the ice. Some 71 players were award- ed medallions by the Esso Cana- da Awards program. The cate- gories recognized were for "Most Dedicated Player", "Most Improved Player", and "Most Sportsmanlike Player". Twenty-three "Special and Individual Awards" were pre- sented. House League Champi- onship trophies were presented to "VanCamp Contracting" (Novice); "Whitby Autowreck- ers" (Atom); "Big V Drugstore" (PeeWee) and "Swamp Auto- body (Bantam). The presentation of some of our "Special Commemorative Awards" were made by Fred Ox- ley, Wendy Bourgeois, Warren Geer, Ken and Fran Sluggett, Sandra and Ryan Fraser, Ryan and Cory McQuade, Jeff An- drews, Dave Jackson and Linda Broadworth. "Banner" presentations were made to Pineridge Sports Atoms (All Ontario Finalists), to "Key- bar Office Equipment Juve- niles" (All-Ontario Finalists) PPMH wraps up season with banquet and to the O.M.H.A. Champion Techstar Bantam Team. The success of the day was thanks to our many business sponsors (see separate thanks in this paper), especially "Moth- er Jackson's Open Kitchens" and "Dollar Plus" Store. As al- ways, the event could not have occurred at all without volun- teers. Just to name a few...Randy Wiseman, Sharon Wiseman, Steve Churchill, Dea- na Harper, Trish Fish, Theresa Wygerde, Bill Van Camp, Nor- ma Van Camp, Rob Kroonen- berg, Ken Koury, Joanne Koury, Jim Duncan, Sue Duncan, Ralph and Diane McCullough, Doug Danter, John MacMaster, Ivan Geer, Ritchie and Kathy LeFort, Debbie Tarbotton, Gord Jones, Allynne Jones and some of the Midget "A" squad. Thanks also to Don Cherry for that Rus- sian hockey stick! I'm sure we've left out some of the volunteers, but thanks to you all in any case. All of our hockey players owe you all a big "Thank-you". PPMHC would like to make a final "Thank-you" as well to all our Team Sponsors, Coaching Staffs, our Board of Directors members and to the Arena Board (and Arena staff). A last reminder to all parents and Association members that our Annual General Meeting and Election of Officers will be held at the Latcham Centre on May 28 at 1 p.m. Port Perry Minor Hockey Cor- poration gratefully acknowledg- es the tremendous support of this fine news publication over our long hockey season.
