"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 9, 1995 -27 Memories.of V-E Day still vivid Fifty years ago, Mon- day, May 8, was V-E Day with the ending of the war. Memories are very vague for me but I remember that we the public stu- dents of Purple Hill School rang the big school bell all morning announcing the fact of the ending of the war in Europe to the com- munity. That evening a gathering was held in Blackstock when an effigy of Hitler was burned at the four corners. I would like to have more details from those who can remember what happened at that special event so that I can include it in next week's news. At 11 a.m. a special service at the Centoph will be held to mark the date. Better health is wished for Jack Lee who under- went surgery last week at Oshawa Hospital and is hoping to be home again soon. Also steady improve- ment is wished for Eldon Fee who had hip surgery last week in Peterborough Hospital. Eldon is hoping to be home before long. Better health is wished for Roy McLaughlin whois in Port Perry Hospital. Congratulations to Ross Tysick who was recog- nized for his 25 years of service to Durham Board of Education. Ross had a cake in his honor and was presented with a picture and a ring to mark the oc- casion. A beautiful wedding took place on Saturday af- ternoon at the St. John's Anglican Church when Nancy Green, daughter of Don and Marjorie Green, became the bride of David Thompson. The reception and dance took place in the Blackstock Recrea- tional Centre. Nancy and David are flying to Van- couver for their honey- moon. Best wishes are ex- tended to Nancy and David who will be living in Lindsay. On Friday, May 12, Marjorie Green will hold an open house when Nan- cy's gifts will be displayed. Friends are invited to at- tend. Another wedding of lo- cal interest on Saturday was the marriage of Lynda Parsons and Bruce Tonkin at Colborne United Church. Her long time friend Esther Kelly was one of the bridesmaids. The reception and dance was held at Creekside Centre at Brighton. Guests from this area were Noreen and Neil Malcolm, Cecil and Marie Gibson, Joanne and Bob Lee and Gerald and Joyce Kelly. Esther Kelly and Francis Peeters of Fesser- ton were weekend guests of Gerald and Joyce Kelly and attended the events of the wedding. Herb and Betty Wright of Ames, Iowa visited their cousins Walter and Au- drey Wright and other cousins in this area. Blackstock Jean Mahaffy and Lor- na Edgerton attended the funeral of their cousin El- gin Todd at Brampton on Wednesday. Don and Marjorie Green attended the funeral of Marjorie's uncle Mr. Hon- ey at Brampton on Tues- day. Gerald and Joyce Kelly paid respects to Joyce's cousin Archie McFayden on Monday evening in Lindsay. The Cartwright High School's annual At Home will be held this Saturday evening May 13 at the Blackstock Rec Centre. A limited number of tickets are available by calling the school. This is always such a delightful event. The senior band was very successful when the group attended a nation musicin Montreal recently. Mr. Bi- erness and the band were featured in the Toronto Star. A special concert will be held at the CHS on Thursday, May 25 when former trustee Joyce Kelly will be honored. Ten 4-H from Durham East will be delegates to Saskatchewan on the Open House Canada Ex- change. To help raise funds Saturday, May 13 4 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the highschool. " Rev.
