"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 16,, 1995 - 13 Vet overwhelmed by Dutch welcome By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star World War 2 veteran Bob Healey couldn't have imagined the reception he would receive when he returned to Holland early this month for the massive VE Day celebra- tion. For more than a week he and his fellow warriors were treated to the best the country had to offer, and hailed over and again as heroes who had brought freedom from Nazi rule. Mr. Healey, of Scugog Island, travelled to Ommen, Holland in late April for the week-long VE Day commemoration, and returned home Friday (May 12). His trip was made possible through the generosity of "local business sponsors. "It was something fab- ulous, I'l] tell you that," he said of the visit. "It's hard to describe in words what the Dutch people think of us. We're king and queen over there." Mr. Healey was a 19- year-old private with the Queen's Own Rifles when he was sent to Holland in the fall of 1944 to take part in an offensive aimed at dislodging the Germans from a country they had held in an iron Community pitched in to help grip for several years. He fought threughout the autumn and winter, and was there when the Nazis were finally defeat- ed, and freedom won in Europe. "I walked up to the spot I went up to 50 years ago with my gun in my hand," he said. "I had a camera in my hand this time." The trip was emotion- al, filled with memories of the long-ago time. Mr. Healey visited Westerdork, a concentra- tion camp where the Nazis carried out the extermination of Jews, Gypsies, and Dutch resis- tors, and was present when a monument to the Queen's Own Rifles was unveiled in the tiny vil- lage of Wons, where his regiment was. called in the waning days of the war to cut off the German retreat. The crowning moment was VE Day celebrations May 8 in Apeldorn, when thousands flowed through the streets and cheered for their Canadian liberators. Throughout the visit, the Canadians were saluted, sometimes in impromptu moments. Mr. Healey remembers a young man of 25 board- ing the vets' bus and delivering a thank-you: HOME. AGAIN: Robert Healey of Scugog Island and wife Marion review highlights of their recent trip to Holland for VE Day celebrations. The local man's visit to his wartime battlegrounds was made possible by donations from local sponsors. "Thank you, Canada, for my freedom," he said. And at another point, Mr. Healey was walking along the street in his' uniform. He was stopped by a woman.
