Rolly Coy said he's talking with government and agriculture officials in an attempt to preserve the AES office in some semblance after learning late in April it will come under the federal govern- ment's tax-chopping axe. The AES office, which has operated here since 1974, provides a link EARLY CALF AND HEIFER PROGRAM (0 - 6 MONTHS) Ask your SHUR-GAIN Dealer about the right product for your helfersl Bos From Our Eerie PORT PERRY FEEDS LTD. 40 Vanedward Dr., Port Perry 985-7363 E . The office will operate this season despite a sub- stantial 35 per cent bud- getary cut, and is to be closed down next spring, the government has declared. That leaves Mr. Coy upset and mystified. "It really is puzzling to try and understand why the government is hitting something that is providing work for the average person," he told the Port Perry Star in an interview recently. "People in this area are just going to lose, lose, lose." MP Alex Shepherd (Durham) said it doesn't make sense for the gov- ernment to provide year- round funding for a ser- vice that is utilized mainly in the summer. He added that he's talk- ing with Canada Employment Centre offi- cials in Oshawa to see if they can take up the slack created by the Port Perry office closure. "Providing service more efficiently to help meet federal budget tar- gets has made it neces- sary to change the way services are delivered to agricultural employers," said Mr. Shepherd. "The agricultural com- munity understands tax- payers can't afford to pay for an office 12 months of the year when it only pro- vides service during a third of that." Mr. Coy disputes those figures, saying his office provides year- -round ser- vice for job seekers. He has been talking with government and ag officials in an attempt to save the service. Phone hikes are slammed Bell Canada's recent- ly announced plans to seek increases for monthly rural tele- phone rates and to charge for local calls, has left the Ontario Federation of Agricul- ture "furious," says OFA President Roger George. "Communication ser- vices in many areas of rural Ontario are ar- chaic and outdated, yet Bell Telephone has the audacity to suggest we should pay more for less," said Mr. George. "If they really want to even out payment for services, then let's see them put 'party lines'in urban areas. That would be equality," he said. Mr. George said many farm operations can not even equip their offices with something as simple as fax ma- chines because the phone service is so obso- lete. Ontario does not just revolve around the urban centres. Rural quality of life and rural jobs depend on a com- munication infrastruc- ture.
