Avoid the expense and inconvenience of a breakdown on the road, far from home. By spend- ing a few extra dollars for complete cooling service on your car, truck or van before your summer holi- day you could save big dol- lars in the long run. The Car Care Canada of the Automotive Industries As- sociation of Canada would like to show you a couple of ways to save money by in- vesting in proper service of your vehicle's cooling system. 1. Save labor charges (or your own time, if you do your own work) by taking care of all necessary re- placements at one time... When one hose or drive belt needs replacing, you're likely to find more in marginal condition. Rubber components under the hood live in a hostile environment, surviving temperatures ranging from sub-zero to more than 118 degrees C., circu- lating up to 28,000 litres of coolant per hour at up to 7.2 kg of pressure. They warrant periodic atten- tion. Have the system pres- sure tested and inspect all hoses, clamps and connec- tions. Hoses may become spongy and soft; or, in some cases, brittle. Also, belts should be inspected for sign of cracked, frayed or glazed condition. Note: The radiator pres- sure cap serves as the safe- ty valve in the cooling sys- tem. The pressure test, available at most service dealers, not only will dis- close existing or potential leaks in the system, it also can detect a faulty pres- sure cap. 2. Save gas with an effi- cient vehicle. Most engines run in the 97-113 degree C. range, controlled by the cooling system thermo- stat. But fuel economy will drop as much as 10 per cent - 20 per cent when en- gine operating tempera- ture falls below 53 degrees C. The small investment to replace a faulty thermo- stat soon can pay for itself, not only in gas savings but also in terms of reduced engine wear. 3. Avoid premature en- gine overhaul through timely maintenance. Cost of repairing an engine damaged by overheating, or by operating too cold, can run into thousands, an expense that can be avoid- ed with thorough proper servicing of the cooling system. In addition to the above mentioned inspection, complete cooling system service should include flushing of the system and installation of fresh anti- freeze coolant (in a 50-50 mixture with water). Fluid leaks are a threat Remember the anxiety you felt the first time you noticed that puddle of wa- ter under your car at a rest stop during vacation? What a relief to discover it was only condensation from the air conditioner. That's about the only kind of fluid leakage that doesn't warrant concern, says Car Care Canada of the Automotive Industries Association of Canada. Any other drip or puddles are omens of potential car trouble, even a safety haz- ard. A common practice is to put up with a minor leak until it's convenient to get it fixed, especially when you are away from home. Delaying such repairs, whi en involve noth- ing more than tightening a hose or replacing a gasket, can be costly. The best way to find and/or prevent leaks is to keep the engine clean and check under and around Brian's CAR CARRER AVAILABLE 9885-2243 24 Hours cet BY Ac... Keeping gaskets, hoses and connections in good condition will prevent most of such problems from occurring. In your own driveway it's relatively easy to lo- cate and identify a leak. At night you can spread paper under the suspi- cious spot for closer scruti- ny the next morning. : In a rest stop or parking lot, however, you first have to determine if the leakage actually has come from your vehicle. It could be from the one which pre- viously satin that space. Your next challenge: to identify the fluid. Color and texture are your main clues. * Green or yellowish wa- ter near the engine is anti- freeze. *Red fluid comes from the automotive transmis- sion or the power steering (although they are not the same). * An oily liquid, usually without much color but with a pungent odor, is likely to be brake fluid. °A thin fluid smelling like gasoline probably is just that. Leakingoil, anti- freeze or gasoline around an engine is hazardous, the latter being the lead- ing cause of car fires. It may be necessary to have a gas leak repaired before starting the engine. Check fluid levels fre- quently on a long trip, es- pecially if there is a possi- ility of aleak. CAUTION: Never re- move the radiator pres- sure cap when the engine is hot. You could be scald- ed. No one particularly wants to look for trouble on a long trip, but an occa- sional check under the hood and around the car at a rest stop may prevent real trouble down the road. #13501 Highway 12 Just South of 7A, 085- 771 7 = Manchester " Your Every brake job i is s different SPECIALIZING IN ABS 3505 1 5757 FRONT END, STEERING, 4x4 Service oan Arles | F150 COMPUTERIZED ALIGNMENT & BALANCE DAHL (most) | pickup RL "rotor °° | 1500 | 15.00 | 15.00° 1990 CAVALIER NO-CHARGE Most cars, * Brake rotor | 25.99 | 26.99 | 42.99 D, BRAKE light trucks lohange):| 1799 | 2399 | 25.90 WSpiCHON and vans * Brake drum | 53.99 | 48.99 | 65.99 " 35005. 00 « at * Wheel con.
