"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, May 24,, 1995 - 17 Overfilling can cause fuel waste and engine problems Do you try to "fill'er up" to even money at the gas pump, causing the auto- matic nozzle to shut off several times before you're satisfied the tank is full? Break the habit, urges Car Care Canada of the Auto- motive Industries Associa- tion of Canada. Overfilling can waste fuel and cause engine problems as well. Further, it pollutes the air. The reason for all this, says the council, is that raw gasoline at the top of the tank enters a tube leading to a vapor recov- ery container under the hood. The charcoal filled canister is supposed to send gas vapors to the en- gine where they are burned off, but the raw gas presents a problem. It creates an over-rich mix- ture and causes poor com- bustion in the engine. The results: poor gas mileage, rough running and possibly hard start- Is your car ready to make the trip? Cars are a lot like peo- ple; when they're in good health they're ready to take on the world. But when they're sick they can ruin your whole vacation. And thousands of vaca- tioning motorists this summer will experience some kind of disabling car trouble. Some mechanical diffi- culties cannot be antici- pated. When a part such as an alternator fails, for example, it's usually with- out warning, so preventa- tive measures don't apply. But when the alternator light comes on because a worn drive belt has been overlooked, that situation need not have happened. Most highway break- downs can be avoided through preventative measures done on one's "home turf." So before you leave on your summer trip, find out whether your vehicle is up to the task. Use this check list from the Car Care Council of the Automotive Industries Association to give it a good "physical." After all, if your vehicle doesn't en- Joy the trip, you probably wont' either. Pre-Trip Check List * Cooling system Coolant at proper level and clean; pressure cap, thermostat and hoses in good condition. Connec- tions tight. Drive Belts Check condition and ad- justments. eBattery Check fluid, where ap- plicable. Inspect termi- nals. eEngine As a preventative meas- ure, invest in a diagnostic check of electrical, igni- tion, fuel and emission control systems. Have needed services, including tune-up, performed. Lubricants Check all fluids. Change engine oil and filter, trans- mission fluid and filter, as needed. Lubricate chassis where applicable. Unburned hydrocar- bons from auto exhaust, a major cause of air pollu- tion, have been reduced by 96 per cent since 1960. The biggest source of trou- ble from the tail pipe now 1s due to maintenance ne- glect: a dirty air filter, worn spark plugs, incor- rect timing or general lack of tune up. But other sources of hy- drocarbon vapors, such as fuel evaporation when fill- ing the vehicle, continue to plague us. Corrective = measures are being taken. For exam- ple, some service stations have special nozzles and hoses to capture these va- pors and return them to the underground tanks. An expensive proposition, but effective. There's talk of incorporating sealed systems on future vehi- cles, whereby the vapors cannot escape during the refuelling process.
