By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Six months after a stinging election loss that cost him his Ward 1 seat, Ken Carruthers is back as a member of Scugog Township council. Mr. Carruthers squeaked by his closest opponent, Jim Grosvenor, to grab the Ward 2 seat in a byelection that wound up around 9:15 last night. He collected 287 votes to Mr. Grosvenor's 274. Three other candidates finished back in the pack. Mr. Grosvenor also finished as runner-up to Marilyn Pearce in the November 1994 munici- pal election. "It was disappointing to lose by 50 votes (to opponent Doug Moffatt in last year's race for Ward 1), but it's just as grati- Carruthers back | after a 13-ballot 'byelection win fying to win by 13 votes, let me tell you," said a delighted Mr. Carruthers. Ward 2 takes in approxi- mately 2,800 voters, of which just more than 800 turned out at the polls. ethan l Mr. Carruthers said he is grateful to the voters who did turn out, noting that the byelec- tion was overshadowed by the impending provincial election, slated for June 8. He credited his campaign team with the win. He said he and his workers knocked on every door in the ward twice, and were working up until half an hour before the polls closed Tuesday night to drum up the vote. That's the simplest way to sum up the feeling of Scugog voters as time winds down on this spring's provincial election. They're also cynical, according to a straw poll con- ducted recently by The Star. One resident said he'll base his vote on "who the biggest liar and the biggest thief are." Another voter suggested pulling names from a hat on voting day. In a random sampling this past week, we called homes across the township -- half in Cartwright, and half west of the causeway -- in an attempt to find out where voter pref- erences lie. Poll has most Scugog voters undecided "just over two weeks away, The results of the straw poll showed nearly two-thirds of voters still haven't made up their minds how they'll mark their ballots on voting day, June 8. With a provincial election people are having a harder time than ever deciding who they'll be supporting when the polls open in June. If there's a prevailing theme, however, it's that folks have had enough of the NDP government. A number of respondents said they're unsure just who will get their vote, but know it won't be Bob Rae's party, represented hors by incumbent MPP Gord ills.
