On Tuesday night at the Port Perry Diamond, Gambler pitchers Mark Gore- ski and Byron Baranieski combined to shut down the Port Perry Juniors as they held the Port team to only four hits while racking up a total of 13 strikeouts. The highlight of the game for Green- bank saw center fielder Ray Kurhan "hit for the cycle" as he collected a sin- gle, double, triple and home run in his five trips to the plate. Hitting for "the cycle" is a rare occurance in baseball and it is the first time in memory that a SJamblor player has accomplished the eat. Paul Goreski added three hits for Greenbank while Steve Durham, Brian Till and Dan Balachorek had two hits each. On Thursday night in Ianson Park in Greenbank, Goreski and Baranieski again teamed up to toss a shutout at the Richmond Hill Rays, as they only al- Gamblers earn two shutouts lowed three hits enroute to an eventual 5-0 Greenbank win. Glen Moreland shut down the Gam- blers for five innings but in the bottom of the fifth Brian Till drilled a triple into the right field corner to score Paul Gore- ski to open the scoring and then scored himseld on a passed ball. Bruce Noble came on in relief of Moreland but the Gamblers greeted him with three consecutive hits follow- ing a lead off walk and scored another three runs to salt this game away. Byron Baranieski and Mark Goreski once again had a combined total of 13 strikeouts during the game and scat- tered three walks for their second excel- lent pitching performance. Brian Till and Don Beaton led the at- tack with two hits each, with Ray Ku- rhan, Chris Burkholder and Paul Gore- ski, each hitting safely. This week the Gamblers go to Brad- ford for a battle with the Sox on Wednesday night and host the Port Perry Antrims the next night in Green- bank of 8 p.m. The Port Perry Mer- chant Bantam Fastball team is back into full swing having played three games already this sea- son. This write-up is brought to you by Peer Pressure where you can not only find excellent clothes but an excellent price as well. The Merchants got off to a slow start as they dropped their first two games before registering a win. The season opener was played in Oshawa and we came out on the short end of a 2-1 score. Marshal McQuaid was on the mound for the Merchants and pitched a superb game as he went the distance, striking out a total of 13 batters. The Merchants were nursing a 1-0 lead on a run by Doug Short who had singled, then scored on Marshal McQuaid's triple, when in the bottom of the seventh inning Oshawa managed to push their two runs across to claim the vistory. Also hit- ting for the Merchants in this game were: Ryan Wil- liamson with a double, Jon Froats with a single and Marc Versage with a triple and two walks. The Merchants next travelled to East Gwillim- bury where they were handed their second loss of the season by a 7-2 score. This game was actu- ally quite close as we were only down by a 3-2 count after three and a half in- nings. Then in the bottom of the fourth inning we made a few costly errors that were to be the turning point of the game. East Gwillimbury cashed in on our mistakes and just closed the door on us the rest ofthe way. Hitting for the Mer- chants in this one were: Jason Best with a triple, Clay Brown with a single and walks to Ryan Wil- liamson, Jon Froats and Ryan Hawkins while Ryan Moines and Scott Jeffery walked twice each. Clay Brown went the dis- tance on the mound for the Merchants striking out eight batters along the way. He pitched a very strong game but the six er- rors behind him were the team's downfall. The Merchants finally got their first home game of the season as they played host to Oshawa. The local boys were really pumped up for this game as they were looking to re- deem themselves after los- ing a close one to Oshawa the week before. Once again, this game was a close one as Oshawa had a 3-1 lead going into Port's Next home game May 31 Bantams are off to a slow start home halfof the fourth. Getting things going for the Merchants was pitch- er Marshal McQuaid who launched a towering solo homerun to straightaway centre field to close the score to a 3-2 count. This seemed to inspire the rest of the Merchants as they all bore down and went to work not only at the plate but in the field as well. The home boys picked up two more runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth while they shut down any of- fence that Oshawa could muster as the local boys went on to win by an 8-3 score. Doing the damage at the plate for the Merchants were: Jon Froats with a double and a walk; Jason Best with a single and a walk; Marshal Moose McQuaid with a monster homer and a walk; Ryan Williamson a double, and walks to Doug Short, Scott Jeffery, Brad Monsma and Owen St. John. The Merchants' next home game is on May 31 as they will play host to Bradford with the opening pitch being at 8:30 p.m. Come on out and support these local boys and see some very entertaining baseball. The Port Perry Juvenile Merchants All-Ontario softball team is together once more and has moved up a level to Junior, even though the team is still of- ficially Juvenile age. This year, the Junior Mer- chants will continue to be a part of the Oshawa and District Men's League which has 13 teams and will be more competitive thanever. Last week, the team got off to a slow start with a miserable 12-0 loss to Greenbank. The players are looking forward to the next match-up with Greenbank, when they know the final score will be much closer. The week before this league game, Greenbank won an exhibi- tion game over Port by the score of 3-2. On Thursday, the Jun- iors visited Durham Fields and played the "BB" Juveniles, losing a close one in the sixth in- ning. Port was leading 2-1 after the third and both pitchers (Venning and Sharpe) were effectively keeping base runners from getting into scoring position. In the sixth in- ning, Oshawa scored the go-ahead run which was enough to win the game. Chad Venning struck out three, allowed two walks, six hits and two earned runs. Squirt team were on the road for their first road game of the sea- son. Markham took a 3-2 lead into the second last inning but our "gold and blue" outscored our hosts 3-2 in the final inning to earn a 5-b tie. David Akermanis, Cory McQuade and Matt Sker- ratt scored in the last in- ning for Port Perry. Our hits were by Matt Sker- ratt, two; Tim Jones, two: Jeff Kane, a double; Adam Lamb and Cory McQuade. Defensively, Adam made a nice throw to the cut-off man from deep in the out- field. Davis threw out a runner from his right field position. Mike Wiseman was heads-up to take the throw at first base. Luke Pilkey contributed with two walks. The Legion pitching was handled by Tim Jones who recorded 12 strikeouts while allowing seven hits and just two walks. This was a good come-from- behind situation and the enthusiasm of Deven Howsam and Matt Fraser helped in the turnaround. Good turnaround, team! On May 17, the team Turnto Page 25
