"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, May 24,, 1995 - 25 --8)8S hi 'SHH a SPORTS _ Squirts a hard-working team From Page 23 was on the road again to face the Willowdale Griz- zlies. The coaching staff juggled the defensive field positions yet again and took advantage of the situ- ation to give Adam Lamb and Matt Skerratt some experience on the pitching rubber while Mike Koury and Tim Jones got a chance to test their versa- tility by going behind the plate. The Grizzlies took ad- vantage of our experimen- tation and limited our of- fence to just four runs. Adam scored two runs, one on a speedy sprint from third on a passed ball after getting on with a sin- gle. Jeff Kane sped around the bases to score a three- run homer to end the game on a high note for the Le- gionnaires, despite the loss. He also had a single and a walk. Our other of- fence were: singles by Matt S. and Tim, two walks by Luke and a free pass to Cory. Luke came down with two deep flyball catches in left field while Tim made a good tag play out at home after Jeff alertly threw home when a Grizzlie tried to sneak in from third. The game will be one to remember for a long time for Adam and Matt Sker- ratt as both notched their first pitching career " strikeouts! The Legion squad ended a busy week of York- Durham League fastball with a home game against Newmarket. The visitors went up 3-0 after three in- nings before our team re- laxed and replied with one of our own as David walked and came around to score in the bottom of the third. Unfortunately, we left bases loaded and let Newmarket "off the hook". In the fifth inning, we came close as we narrowed the score to 4-3. Adam led off with a single, stole sec- ond and came in to score on Jeff's triple. Jeff, in turn, scored on Tim's sec- ond hit. Newmarket took advantage of several final inning errors and closed out an 8-3 win. Our other hit was by Matt S. Alex Mitchell got his first look at league play as he came up from the "sub" list to help out. Tim absorbed the "L" de- spite 11 strikeouts as he was touched for five walks and nine hits after a busy week. The 1995 Legion Squirt team appears to be a hard- working team that will not throw in the towel readily as they face more experi- enced teams from much larger centres.
