10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 30, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Students preach peace By Liz Bredin Everyone knows about Bill Lishman's flock of mi- grating geese. We all un- derstand that when they go south for the winter, they come back in spring. But, how many of you know about the migrating cranes of Cartwright High School. Six weeks ago, some students at CHS be- gan preparations for a play called "1000 Cranes", written by Colin Thomas, a Vancouver playwright. It dealt with the true story of Sadako Sasaki, a Japa- nese girl who died of leu- kemia due to the afteref- fects of the atomic bomb. A Japanese legend says that cranes are immortal, and any sick person who folds 1,000 will have eter: nal life, like the crane. Sa- dako tried to fold one thou- sand, but died before she could finish. After being greeted by Eileen Snooks and Doug Healy and registration by Dorothy Butson, we all joined in the singing of our National Anthem and the Grace before meals accom- panied by Edna Beckett on the piano. A delicious pot luck din- ner with a great variety of food was enjoyed by the seniors. Our thanks to our senior ladies for their con- tribution of tasty dishes they have supplied for all our dinners and to the kitchen staff for their help. With Geoffrey Gilham leading, all present joined in the singing of two gold- en oldies that were famil- iar to us. Jacklyn Kerr represent- ing the Kerr Bus Lines, in- formed us about the trips available to all seniors. A list of these trips are al- ways posted on the bulle- tin board. Ruby Beare introduced us to the Greenbank Pup- peteers, a group of young people led by Janice Lee. They put on a great perfor- mance that was thorough- ly enjoyed by all. Led by Antonelle Weiss- bach, the seniors exercise and line dancing class demonstrated some of the routines they perform twice each week. Classes will be starting in Septem- ber, 1995 and are open to all seniors. The evening closed with the singing of God Save The Queen. The people willing to fill positions on our seniors executive will be intro- duced at our next meeting on June 14.
