"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 30, 1995-19 Remember Flower Fest Last Wednesday eve- ning proved to be an inter- esting meeting of the Brooklin Horticultural So- ciety with a good number in attendance. This being the first flower show of the season there were a total of 112 entries on the show table, with many beautiful specimens in the tulip class, African violets, etc. Top prize awards went to Eleanor McCallum for the best tulip specimen which was a bunch flowered yel- low beauty; best decora- tive was won by Marg Powell for her water de- sign "Fresh Outlook;" best house plant (other than African violet) went to Mary Housego for her foli- age plant; best African vio- let winner was Debbie Longman. Congratulations to all of these people. Special feature for the evening was our guest speaker Marjorie Mason Hogue. Her subject was "Xerascape Gardening." Now we know what this is all about. Xerascape gar- dening is planting a gar- den which requires very little water - drought toler- ant plants. Her presenta- tion was most interesting and informative, as well as showing us many beau- tiful slides. Marjorie owns the Ma- son Hogue Gardens locat- ed on Durham Rd. near Uxbridge. The plant nur- sery is open to the public until the end of October. The hours are Thursday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p-m. with guided garden walks. I know I would love to visit this garden some- time. The iris show and gener- al meetingis scheduled for Monday, June 12 to be Pregnancy seminar A prepregnancy sem- inar for couples will be held June 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Community Me- morial Hospital (451 Paxton St., Port Perry in the Education Re- source Room. Guest speakers for the evening will be Dr. Steven Russell, a local family physician, Lau- rie Bray, a public health nurse and Milly Ryan-Harshman, a public health nutrition- 1st. Topics to be dis- cussed include health issues, decisions to make about becoming parents and the impor- tance of healthy eating before pregnancy. The event is free, but participants are asked to remster before June 7 by calling the Health Department at (905) 852-9161. Please note the changeofdate. Ashburn Florence Ashton held at Burns Church. Speaker will be Joan Gar- land speaking on herbs. Now we need some nice warm weather to bring those irisinto bloom. Don't forget the Flower L a Festival at Burns on Sat- urday, June 10 from 10 am. to 4 p.m. Come out and enjoy the day with your flower friends. Re- freshments will be availa- ble. Arnold Ashton from To- ronto visited with his par- ents Doug and Florence Ashton on Sunday. Rev.
