A police spokesman said Monday morning that of 282 trucks inspected during the blitz May 23 to 26, some 146 were found to be in violation of safety standards, and charges were laid..... Some trucks were in such bad shape they had to be towed away from the inspection site, said the spokesman. And one truck was found to have vir- tually no brakes at. all. The blitz was a joint effort staged by the provincial Ministry of Transportation along with Durham Regional Police and the OPP. The inspection team was in north Durham May 24, checking trucks in Manchester, Beaverton and Goodwood. Another inspection blitz is likely to be carried out in the near future, the spokesman said. . The spot inspections are an effort by the province and police to address an alarming number of accidents -- many of them fatalities -- involving trucks on major roadways View Lake home burns Firefighters were unable to save a Scugog home after fire started Saturday night. Emergency crews were called to the scene of the home, on Coleman Crt. in the View Lake area, after a 911 call came in, according to officials. A woman in the house was awakened by the smell of smoke around 11:30 p.m. Saturday (May 27). She went outside and saw the house was ablaze. Firefighters from the Caesarea station arrived on the scene, but were unable to contain the blaze before it destroyed the house. All contents of the home were destroyed in the blaze, officials said. Cost of damage and lost property is estimated at $110,000. It is not known at this time how the fire started.
