This year's event will feature between 16 and 20 teams, and is to be held at the Port Perry arena June 22 to 24. And the public is welcome to come out and watch as extrication crews from fire departments throughout the Central Ontario Region face a variety of simulated acci- dent scenarios, and work against the clock to free would-be victims. In addition to vying for the top spot in the final standings -- winning crews advance to more competition -- the event 1s designed to be an edu- cational experience for the firefighters, Dave Ballingall, a Captain at the Port station and com- petition coordinator, said. "We advertise it as an extrication competition, and a learning sympo- sium, he said. 'Everybody learns from these things That new v knowledge might come from watch- Re ing the techniques and tactics applied by other teams, or from seminars and demonstrations. This year in Port, firefighters will be supplied with a school bus and given time to explore methods of dealing with situations involving them. They'll also attend a lecture on school bus scenarios Thursday night. The educational aspect is all-important at the events, said Mr. Ballingall. "If you take one thing back from one of these that helps you to save a life on the road, whatever the expense is, it's going to be worth it," he said. During the competi- tion, each team will deal with two scenarios. they will use a variety of tools, including hand-tools and hydraulic equipment, such as the well-known jaws of life. The Scugog fire depart- ment has obtained a num- ber of wrecks that will be used during the competi- tion, and has also received new vehicles from GM, Honda, Nissan and Ford. After the event those cars will be donated to the Port Perry High School. It will cost members of the public just a buck to come and observe the competition. Organizers will be selling buttons around town in advance for those who want to attend as well. This is the fifth year for the Durham competi- tion, and Scugog has played host twice before, in 1991 and 92. For the | last couple of years, it's been held in Uxbridge.
