This writeup is brought to you by XL. Gas Bar where the service is always fast and cour- teous. The Merchants started off fast as Doug Short lined a triple with the bases loaded to give the home team a 3-0 lead after only one inning. Then in the home half of the second inning it was Ryan Hawkins who hit a three run homer to give the Merchants a 6-0 lead. The boys didn't get any more runs until the bottom of the fifth inning when Brad Monsma doubled in two more runs to extend their lead to an 8-0 margin. The final run came in the bottom of the sixth inning and was due to several errors by the visiting Bradford team to make it a 9-0 final. Not only was the Merchants offence working but so was the defence. Ryan Hawkins made a couple of great catches at short stop and Jason Best did a very good Roberto Alomar impersonation at second as he went deep into the hole behind second to backhand balls and throw the runners out. Pitching for the Mer- chants was Marshal McQuaid and he threw an out- standing game. After four innings Marshal had faced only the maximum 12 batters but then in the top of the fifth he lost the perfect game to a walk but he still had a no-hitter on the line. The no-hitter lasted until the seventh inning when Bradford's lead off batter got a single on a very close play at first. Seems the umpire felt sorry for the visit- ing team not having got any runners on base. Still though Marshal pitched a one hit shutout going the distance and striking out eight Bradford batters along the way. Hitting for the Merchants in this game were Owen St. John with a single and a walk, Ryan Hawkins with a walk, single and home run, Marshal McQuaid with a walk and a double, Doug Short with a walk and a triple, Brad Monsma with a walk, single and a dou- ble, and walks to Ryan Wilhamson with two, Ryan Moynes with two, Derek Tindal with two and Mark Versage and Jason Best with one each. The Merchants next homegame will be a Sunday afternoon double header against Bramalea on June I11withalp.m.starttime. : I PSR I | Ra ee eA TO SR TA TTS TG | Te -- rT CTS ---- % n " y at rps 2 BRR i cf EES I Nn eg ay a A i es Mf a A ---- i i
