Cornish just keep whizzing along when it comes to math competitions. As you may recall, we told you back in April about the team of Grade 7 and 8 kids from the Port Perry school who entered the Pascal competition for junior high school students, and cleaned up. Well... they're at it again. This time it was the Gauss math contest, an event for Grade 7 and 8 kids. R.H. Cornish finished first among Durham Region schools, and placed students among the top five for indi- vidual scores in both divisions. And Grade 7 math whiz Paul Nguyen notched a perfect 150 on his test. Kids at R.H. Cornish have partici- pated in a number of competitions this scholastic year, and have consistently turned in impressive results. That's pleasing to math teachers Reg Philip and Harvey Friede, who have spent hours with students helping them pre- pare for the problem-solving exercises. "The preparation for these contests is really the exciting part," said Mr. Philip, explaining that the contest for- mat gives the kids the opportunity to take what they've learned through the course of their regular curriculum and apply it. "This is application of mathe- matics, which is what it's all about," he said. "I really do believe there's some- thing about contests that brings out the best in the kids." "Participants were given an hour to complete the 25-question tests, which- cover all areas of the curriculum they encounter during the course of the school year. As is becoming our tradi- tion with stories about the clever kids at Cornish, here's a sample. This is from the Grade 8 test: In the diagram, the line segment BC joins the centres of the two circles. If BC =8 and AC =10, the circumference of the smaller circle is A 7 (A) 12x (B) 2r (C) 4r (D) 8x (E) 6r The answer, of course, is C. The local participants took well to the pressure of the test, with a number of kids notching near-perfect scores. In the Grade 7 category there was Paul Nguyen, who did score 150 out of 150, as well as Ian Anderson with 145, and Cortney Palleske, with 144. That's 439 out of a possible 450, tops in Durham Region. Grade 8 participants who did well included Adam Crockatt (144) and Chris Jones (144), as they racked up 406 out of a possible 450, first out of 45 Durham schools in the competition. R.H. Cornish also turned in strong individual and team performances in four other events this year. Mr. Philip said that's a pretty good indication the math program at the school is working, and the students are taking the message and applying it in earnest. "We're very thrilled," he said. "I think it's a pretty good reflection of a good Grade 8 or Grade 7 program. JEFF MITCHELL/PORT PERRY STAR WISE GUYS: The math wizards at R.H. Cornish Public School in Port Perry have done it again, taking top position among Durham schools in both Grade 7 and 8 categories of a math contest.
