"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 13, 1995 - 19 I EE --------.------. h) El --------------h-- SPORTS _ Bantams win two, lose one The Port Perry Merchant Bantam fastball club played three league games this past week winning two and losing a close one. This week's writeup is brought to you by Kirby Structures. The Merchants travelled to Vaughan on Wednes- day, June 7 where they managed to pick up their first win of the week. The Merchants came out swinging and by the end of the first inning they had a 6-0 lead. The game turned into quite a defensive game from this point on as Vaughan was the only team to score a run to make it 6-1 until the sixth inning. The Merchants picked up two runs in each of the last two innings while Vaughan was held to two in the sixth and one in the seventh to make it a 10-4 final in favor of the Merchants. Clay Brown was on the mound for the Merchants and went five strong innings as the drop ball was working well causing the Vaughan players to hit a lot of ground balls for easy outs. Mar- shal McQuaid came on in relief for the final two in- nings to close the game out. Doing the offensive work for the Merchants were: Clay Brown with four singles, Doug Short with two singles, and singles by Marshal McQuaid, Brad Mon- sma, Owen St. John, Jason Best and Marc Versage. Picking up walks were Derek Tindall, Scott Jeffery and Ryan Moynes. The Merchants next took to the field on Sunday, June 11 in Port Perry for a double header against Bra- malea. The first game started out okay as the Mer- chants shut down Bramalea in the top half of the in- ning and managed to pick up a run in the bottom of the inning to take a 1-0 lead. The second inning was a disaster of sorts for the Merchants as they allowed Bramalea to pick up seven runs to take a 7-1 lead. The score stayed this way until the home half of the third inning when Marc Versage led off the inning with a booming home run to straight away centre field. This seemed to wake up the Mer- chants as they managed to pick up three more runs to make it a 7-5 game. The Merchants continued the comeback as they tied the game up at seven a piece with two more runsin the fourth inning. With the defence holding the Bramalea players at bay the offence continued to roll along as they picked up three runs in the fifth inning to take a 10-7 lead. Not giving up however was Bramalea who mounted a comeback of their own to tie the game at 10 a piece to set the stage for the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out Jason Best launched a long ball and legged it out for a triple. With the winning run standing on third base only sixty feet away it was Marc Versage who would seal the victory with a solid single to make itan 11-10 final in the Merchants favor. Marshal McQuaid was on the mound for the Mer- chants and went the distance for the win. The offence was led by Marc Versage who had a homer, triple, sin- gle, a sacrifice fly and was hit by a pitch (well done Marc). Also helping out at the plate were: Jason Best with two singles, a triple and a walk, Ryan Hawkins with a single, triple, a walk and was hit by a pitch, Scott Jeffery a triple, singles by Doug Short, Ryan Wil- liamson and Marshal McQuaid, Jon Froats and Ryan Moynes had a walk each. The second game of the double header had the home team Merchants jump out to a quick 3-Olead at the end of the first inning. The defences for both teams was working well but it was Bramalea that would get back into the game as they picked up two runs in the third inning and one in the fourth to tie the game up at three a piece. The Mer- chants ran into trouble in the top of the fifth inning as Bramalea bunched some solid hits together and banged in four runs to take a 7-3 lead. The Merchants got one of these back in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 7-4 game. The home half of the seventh inning was as exciting as it gets. The Mer- chants are a determined bunch and they were not about to give up. They opened up with a triple, single, triple to score two runs to make it a 7-6 game and have the tying run standing at third base. Then all of a sudden it's a strike out, shallow fly ball out and a throw out at home plate on the tagup at- tempt and the game is over. Close but no cigar the Bra- malea hangon for the 7-6 win. Jon Froats and Clay Brown shared the pitching du- ties in this game and both did an admiral job. Hitting for the Merchants in this game were: Doug Short with three singles, Ryan Hawkins and Ryan Williamson with a single and triple each. Jason Best with two singles and Jon Froats, Ryan Moynes and Scott Jeffery with a single each. a. The Merchant defence made quite a few excellent plays as well in the two games. Jason Best was once again doing his Roberto Alomar imitation at second base making some grabs that had the crowd oohing and ahing. Scott Jeffery had a couple of timely catches in the outfield, Jon Froats made a tricky pickoff at third base on a ground ball that he scooped and tagged a runner who had ventured too far off of third base. Ryan Hawkins flagged down a line drive and dove into second base to turn a double play as another runner had wandered a bit too far off the bag. The Merchants next home game is on Wednesday, June 21 against Peterborough with an 8:30 p.m. start time. Come on out and give us your support you won't be disappointed. SEE MORE Merchants tough at Guelph tourney The Port Perry Mer- chant Bantam fastball club travelled to Guelph to participate in a one day tournament on Saturday, June 10. This write up is brought to you by Peer Pressure. The Merchants first game of the day was against the local Guelph team and after the long drive down the boys were ready to play. The defence was shutting down the Guelph batters not allow- ing arun over the first four innings while the offence was doing its job as well picking up two runs to take a 2-0 lead after four. Guelph managed one run in the fifth inning then the wheels fell off for the Mer- chants as the error bug raised its ugly head again and Guelph counted four runs to take a 5-2 lead. The Merchants picked up two runs in the sixth make it a 5-4 game but that was as close as the boys were to get as Guelph scored one more in the sev- enth to round out the scor- ing and take a 6-4 victory. Clay Brown started on the mound and did a great job until a blister forced him out of the game with a 2-1 lead. Marshal McQuaid came on in relief but just couldn't contain the Guelph batters and the er- ror bug all at once. Doing the hitting for the Mer- chants in this game were: Doug Short and Marshal McQuaid with a double each, Jon Froats with two singles and Derek Tindall, Scott Jeffery and Jason Best with a single each. The Merchants next game was against Strat- ford and although the Merchants put up a good solid effort they came up just a bit short as they lost by a 5-3 score. This was a very close game as the score was tied at three apiece after six innings of play but the Merchants just couldn't overcome the two runs that Stratford picked up in the top of the seventh that sealed the win. Marshal McQuaid started on the mound but took a line drive off his pitching arm that put him out of the game. Jon Froats came on in relief and did a superb job. Doing the hitting in this game for the Merchants were: Doug Short with a triple, Marshall McQuaid with a double and singles to Jason Best and Jon Froats. With the loss the Mer- chants were out of the tournament and on their way home, but could all hold their heads high as they all played well and with a break or two they could easily have gone on further.
