Once we were all wear- ingname tags, the Greens gave us a brief tour of the facilities, pointing out such features as the x-ray room, the surgery room and the computer sys- tems. Later we played a game where we were each given a slip of paper, upon which was written either the common or technical name of a bone. The object of the game was to find the. person who had the other name for the bone which you possessed. Following the game, we sat around in a circle and introduced ourselves. Next came the election of club officers; nominations were accepted and Mike Metcalf was elected as president, Lisa Nesbitt as vice-president, Colleen Arbuckle as secretary and Heather Malcolm as press reporter. We then drew names to form our "Go For The Gold" team: Heather SPECIALIZING IN ALL TYPES OF FARM INSURANCE FREE CONSULTATION "FARM LIABILITY '® EQUIPMENT ® PRODUCE COVERAC 2 ® LIVESTOCK a EMMERSON INSURANCE BROKERS LIMITED Since 1917 193 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY, ONT. (905) 985-7306 Goulding (senior), Brooke i McLaughlin (Intermedi- ate), Melonie Allin (Jun- ior), Kathryn Cartwright (Novice), and Colleen Ar- buckle (alternate). Dr. Green then showed us a few x-rays, including one that portrayed a dog suffering from a displaced hip. Once we had closed the meeting our leaders gra- ciously served us donuts and pop. The next meeting will take place on May 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Newcastle Vet Clinic. The Metcalfs will be bringing in their dog to have her spayed. Anyone, age 10-21, who is even remotely interested in animals is encouraged to attend. Hope to see you there! Meeting No. 2 The second meeting of the Durham East 4-H Vet- erinary Science Club took place on May 30 at the Newcasle Veterinary Clin- ic. Once all of the members had arrived, we were led into the back of the clinic where the Metcalf's dog Molly was laying on an ex- amining rack awaiting a hysterectomy. The Greens had sedated Molly, in preparation of her surgery, with Mike Metcalf's assistance. (Mike is hoping to enter Guelph University later this year to become a vete- rinary). Then they anes- thetized her and then Mike and Dr. Green shaved and sterilized Mol- ly's lower abdomen to en- sure that her incision wouldn't become infested with bacteria. Molly was then transported ihto the surgery room, and Dr. Green continued the oper- ation. Throughout the dura- tion, Sue Green showed us anatomy pictures which depicted the process that was underway. The operation itselflast- ed approximately 25 min- utes and everyone was fas- cinated. Dr. Green closed the three different layers of Molly's incision, and we were passed around exam- ples of the stitching mate- rials that he used for each. Once Dr. Green had fin- ished he and Mike trans- ported Molly into the re- covery room where the anesthetic soon lost its ef- fect, and where Molly awoke once again. Mike Metcalf had Alison Malcolm lead usin the 4-H pledge. Once the minutes had been read by our sec- retary, Colleen Arbuckle, we discussed a change in our meeting schedule; our next meeting will be held on June 15 at 7 p.m. at the PLEASE 2{=1 eo) dod HW THIS NEWSPAPER Newcastle Clinic. We closed the meeting at approximately 9:20 p.m. after a very interest- ing session, and enjoyed Veterinary juice and chips, courtesy of our wonderful leaders. It's still not too late to join.
