Ken McConnell and Blair McBratney saw service on the mound for Scarbo- rough. It was a perfect night for baseball and the large crowd on hand were treat- ed to a most entertaining fastball game, as the hit- ters on both teams lined balls to all areas of Green- bank Ball Park. Paul Foucault of the | Royals and Greg Newell of the Gamblers were the big hitters of the night as they both had two home runs apiece to pace the hitting attack. First Greenbank had the lead, then the Royals, then the Gamblers again as the game wore on but fi- nally Scarborough broke a 4-4 deadlock in the sixth inning and hung on for a 5- 4 win and create a four team first place logjam. Greenbank, Scarbo- rough Royals, Oshawa Heat and Oshawa Juniors are all virtually tied for top spot after the first third of the 1995 season, with each team suffering only a single loss. Next Thursday night the Gamblers will host Brampton at Ianson Park at 8 p.m. On the weekend, Green- bank played in the Balti- more Tournament which they had won for the past three years. This is the first year of bowling for Mr. and Mrs. Dallas and the first tournament they have competed in. J Il te Gamblers' loss tightens standings Gamblers as they came home this time empty handed. They opened the tourna- ment on Saturday morn- ing and behind the three hit pitching of Byron Bara- nieski. thev defeated the "North Fred" Jrs. (Napan- ee) by a 1-0 score. Mark Goreski came off the bench to drive in Pete Oosterholt with the games only run and give Green- bank their sixteenth Con- secutive win in Baltimore over the last four years. Their luck finally ran out in game two as they out hit the Oshawa Jrs. by 8 to 3 but could not get the clutch hit(s) that could have given them the win and left eleven men on base as they bowed to the Oshawa team by a 2-0 score. Sunday saw a similar situation as they outhit the Scarborough Royals but again they could not get the key hit(s) with men in scoring position and suf- fered a 3-1 setback and they were out of the tour- nament. The Gamblers are an ex- cellent defensive club and rarely beat themselves with shoddy fielding bu on Sunday some infiel miscues led directly to Scarborough scoring two of their three runs. Goreski and Baraniski pitched well for the Green- bank Club during the tournament and Chris Burkholder led the team attack with five solid hits. Mark Goreski and Brian Till each had three hits with Goreski also driving in a pair of runs. Steve Durham and Greg Newell with two hits each were the only other Gamblers with more than one hit. KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR Bill Hopkins, of Port Perry, recorded his fourth hole-in-one on June 14 on the 7th hole at Sum- merlea Golf Course. He used a 3-iron on the 135- yard, par 3 hole. it is his fourth lifetime hole-in-one and his second on that particular hole. This past week saw the Port Perry "Junior" Merchants continue their win- ning streak, giving them five wins in the last six games. On Tuesday, the Markham Juniors visited Port and were not in the game until the seventh inning. Port had gone ahead 5-1 going into the seventh, when three costly errors and timely hitting al- lowed Markham to score four runs and tie the game. This forced the game to go into extrainnings. In the top of the eighth, Port quickly got three outs with a pop up to Vennin at first, a strike-out by Card, an ground-out from Laird to Venning. In the bottom of the inning with two out, Card easily scored from second on a "Smart" RBI single to win the game. Card was the winning pitcher, striking out 14, walking three, allowing four hits and only one earned run. On Thursday night, the Juniors visit- ed Durham Fields to play the experi- enced Mickey Finns men's team. Port was leading 4-0 going into the sixth when Oshawa was allowed to score two unearned runs without getting a hit. Junior Merchants win five of last six games The third out was a long fly ball caught at the fence by McBride to end an exasperatinginning. Even though the Juniors now have two more wins under their belts, there are some specific areas they will be workingon in preparation for the Elimi- nations.
