Board member Sarah MacDonald asked for the information during a meeting of the board in Board member seeks info on new recruits Police equity plan on target: Chief Port Perry Friday morn- ing, saying it would illus- trate how well the force is adhering to hiring guidelines set out in its employment equity poli- cy. But Ms MacDonald, who is black, said she supports the force's over- riding policy of hiring on the basis of competency, rather than race or gen- der. Following that simple rule of thumb will result in a wide range of candi- dates being hired, she said, and allay fears of employment equity oppo-' nents who claim provin- cial legislation amounts to hiring "quotas". Board member Bruce MacArthur agreed that the police force ought to reflect the varied racial and gender make-up of Durham Region. Officers who reflect the communi- ty will be more effective as they perform their jobs on the street, he said. "It just makes good common sense to have an employment equity pro- gram." Police Chief Trevor McGagherty said the board could be supplied with information on the new officers. He said 17 new cops have been hired this year, and 11 more hirings are planned. The chief said that the Durham force has an employment equity policy in place in accordance with provincial require- ments, and that ability to perform the job is paramount in candidate selection. "It's a competency- based plan," he said. "A person would not be hired simply because of gender," the Chief told reporters. ~~ Durham Counselling Service Experienced Psychotherapist Individual & Family Counselling Confidential, Convenient Office Call Suzanne at 985-0602 P.O. The Blue Ribbon insig- Weather blamed for donor drop Last Wednesday's wonderful weather came at the expense of the blood donor clinic held in Port Perry, say organizers. For the first time in years, the clinic, held June 14 at the Masonic Lodge downtown, failed to bring in the amount of blood requested by the Red Cross, said organizer Peter Miles. The turn-out was not bad -- 161 people showed up for the clinic, and 150 units were collected -- but the number of units was below the 175 requested . by the Red Cross, said Mr. Miles. "It's the first time we've been under their request in four years," he said. : "I think it was the weather," Mr. Miles said, noting the beautiful, spring-like conditions that prevailed last Wednesday. "People were at the cottage, or down at the beach, or out in the garden." Local farmers, who often contribute, also had to take to the fields while conditions for haying were so good, he noted. Mr. Miles is hoping that the next clinic, planned for September, will see Port Perry donors out in force once again. It's being held at the hall on Queen St. Sept. 13 No problems as bikers hold bash There were few prob- lems when bikers held their annual bash this past weekend in Caesarea, Durham Regional Police reported. There were a couple Highway Traffic Act charges laid and one charge for possession of a narcotic -- marijuana -- when 360 members and associates of the Paradise Riders motorcycle club held their annual rally and picnic, police said Monday. The bikers have adopt- ed a "good neighbor poli- cy" and keep a lid on unruly behavior when they hold their get- together, said a police spokesman. wi oy HOSPICE KY uxBrRIDGE SCUGOG INCLUDING BROCK TOWNSHIP FIFTH Annual General Meeting Thursday, June 22, 1995 7:30 p.m. Hospice Office Uxbridge Town Hall, 51 Toronto St. S.
