On Sunday, June 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the historic village on Scugog Is- land will host a Teddy Bear Picnic and Strawberry Social. There will be a Teddy Bear Clinic, face painting and craft vendors. You will be entertained with demon- strations by costumed enterpreters, mu- sic by Cathy Reid-Naiman, puppet shows by the Rids Store and an old fash- ioned Teddy Bear, "Walk in the Woods". Parents can enjoy a delicious Victori- an Strawberry Lunch Social in the His- toric Church's Tea Room. Admission is $3.50 for adults and $2 for seniors and students. Kids under 12 are admitted free. The museum is located on Island Rd. east of Port Perry, north of Hwy. 7A. Magician featured in Blackstock On Wednesday, June 28 the Blackstock Co- Operative Nursery School presents the magical en- tertainer Earl Brown to kick off their "Fresh Start For Fall." Over the past several months, directors of the school have been making changes to better meet the needs of their community. As well, these changes will also prepare children for senior kindergarten and provide a necessary alter- native to junior kinder- garten. Founded in 1977, the school's main goal is to provide an environment of socialization for children. Programs in the fall will consist of classes available for two, three and four year olds. In addition there will be special sessions based on music and creative move- ment. More information will be available at their open house during that evening. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show be- gins at 7 p.m: The magic show is free of charge. (O.V.E.R.T.) is a charitable non-profit or- ganization that has dedi- cated time and energy to ground search and rescue in Durham Region. Shane Harbinson, O.V.E.R.T.'s operation coordinator, started the team in 1990 just after Julie Ann Stan- ton went missing. Since then, O.V.E.R.T. has been training its vol- unteers by holding Search and Rescue courses which include a twenty hour Search Level 1 course that new members take before being assigned to a stan- dard search unit. These courses are designed to implement a professional- ly trained ground search and rescue team in Dur- ham Region. The next course is scheduled for the weekend of July 21. After completing the course, members are at- tached to a search section and participate in four search simulations per year. As well, more train- ing specializing in the area of canine, rescue, tac- tical search is available af- ter the initial training is completed. The Ontario Emergency Response Team Inc. is in the process of raising funds to bring its first search unit active in Au- gust of this year to work in conjunction with the Dur- ham Regional Police Ser- vices. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, or can contribute a finan- cial donation to facilitate launching the team, please call 404-2889 for further information.
