Port Perry, Ontario Debbie McEachern, Robert Taylor, Richard Drew Canadian Community Newspaper Association Editorial Comment - There are a number of Liberal MPs who are probably being declared heroes in their ridings this week, and Durham representative Alex Shepherd is among them. They are not, however, nearly as popular among their colleagues. Last Tuesday, nine Grit MPs defied their party and their boss, Prime Minister Jean Chretien, and voted against Bill C-68, the government's proposed gun legislation. They did so knowing full well they could probably expect harsh retribution, as they had been warned in the weeks leading up to the vote no dissension would be tolerated among the ranks. And Thursday night, another handful of Liberal members went against party opinion and rejected Bill C-41, the hate crimes law that has also raised emotional debate as it has been kicked around Parliament Hill. Whether or not you agree with the votes the MPs made is one issue. But the prevailing matter is this: Why are MPs being threatened 5 7 7 7 7 / A 1 A 4 XN ' pg ~ 2% -- _----__ --" and punished for pursuing the very aims of the Liberal party, as stated in its pre-election Red Book on policy? A predominant attraction in that document was the declaration that MPs under a Liberal government would be given more free votes, ending an era of party solidarity that has for years frustrated constituents who watched their men and women in Ottawa mindlessly following the party line, despite pleas from home to do the opposite. They say the honeymoon lingers for Jean Chretien and the Liberals. But it will be just a matter of time before we stand back, look at the picture, and demand the promises made before the election be fulfilled. We're watching. And waiting.
