Police to hit the streets on bicycle Lions contribute $1,800 By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Police have taken to the streets of Scugog in a new way -- on bicycles. Thanks to a hefty donation by the Port Perry Lions club, 26 Division officers in Port Perry are now outfitted with a top-of-the-line mountain bike and accompanying equip- ment, which will allow them to expand the patrols they now carry out in the Port Perry area. A ceremony was held at the Lions' hall in Manchester Saturday morning to present the bike to local police. Club president Gord Brown said the Lions were approached by Durham Regional Police Const. Jeff Ward, who had obtained permission from Division Inspector Nancy Desjardine to raise funds for the bike patrol effort. "He outlined the advantages of having offi- cers that can move a little quicker than ones on foot," said Mr. Brown. "We as a club grasped the idea that that's a good way to use community funds." The Lions donated $1,800 toward the bike and other equipment, get- ting Port's bike patrol off and rolling. Inspector Desjardine said she supported the idea for a bike patrol after seeing it take off so well in urban divisions in the south end of the region. Bike patrols began in: Oshawa three years ago. "We've found so far it's really good public rela- tions," she said. "Citizens in the community are really happy to see offi- cers out in the communi- ty." Officers on bikes are more approachable than coppers in cruisers, said the Inspector, adding that a good rapport is estab- lished between police and residents. It's also effective polic- ing, particularly in the area's parks and subdivi- sions, said the Inspector. Officers are rolling now throughout 26 Division in Port, as well as Uxbridge and Brock. In all there are six officers involved in the patrols, two in each area station.
