Port Perry and District Minor Softball Association has hosted the event each year and has brought top- notch international ball to town each time. This year's event will add local flavor to the event as the Greenbank Gamblers will take to the field against the New Zealand squad in the second game of a double header. : On July 12 New Zealand takes on a team of All Stars made up from the Oshawa and City District Softball Association, with the Gamblers headlining the Merchants' action This sports report for the "Junior" Merchant Fastball team is spon- sored by R.B. The Port "Junior" Mer- chants had a bit of a break 'this week, only having to show up at the ball park "once on Thursday night. The Oshawa Juniors visit- ed Port and as expected, this game turned out to be a pitcher's duel with a very close final score. - In the fifth, Oshawa was ahead 1-0. There were two out, and Laird was at sec- ond when Moase drove a hard liner to centre field. Unfortunately, a hard throw caught Laird at the plate and the score was still 1-0. Oshawa were able to get two more runs in the sixth and, even though Port out hit their opponent with 5 hits to 3, the score ended with Port on the losing end. John Ennis had two of the three hits for Oshawa with a triple and a single, and drove in the only earned run. Simpson, for Oshawa and Card for Port had a head to head battle, with both striking out many of the hitters they faced. Nei- ther pitcher allowed a walk in the game. Simp- son pitched seven inning with 13 strikeouts, five hits and no earned runs al- lowed. Card pitched seven innings with 11 strike- outs, three hits, and one earned run allowed. The Port "Juniors" look for- ward to meeting the Oshawa Juniors again. Minor ball executives are . hoping to attract close to 3,000 people to each night's games, which will take place on the lakefront's north diamond. The New Zealand team will spend the day in Port Perry, with township coun- cil entertaining the squad for the day. The team is playing 28 games in 27 nights on their trip through Ontario. All involved expect the games to feature top calibre all. The New Zealand team is not expected to walk away with an easy vic- tory over the All Star team or the Gamblers.
