16- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 4, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SPOR] IS(0) 9 p PORT PERRY STAR 4 STAR ORTS KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR IT'S A WRAP! Frank Fielding, left, Fields of Dreams Tournament Co- ordinator, along with his committee of Ron Rowntree, Terry Coyne and Rip Green congratulate each other on a job well done. The committee was kept busy the last few weeks planning the annual tournament, but the event was a success. More than 60 mens and co-ed teams took part in the weekend tournment. See story for more details. k Peewee MoJacks in tourney The Modacks travelled to Stratford for the weekend of June 24-25 to partici- pate in a tournament there that they've attended the last three years. The skies were bright and sunny and the temperature hot when they took to the diamond for game one against Glen- coe. Mark Richardson took to the mound and allowed three hits, and "hree walks while striking out three over the first five innings. Chris Jones came on in relief in the sixth striking out one with no free passes and no hits. On the offense, Mike Versage led the at- tack with three singles. He was followed by Darryl Dalton with a pair while Jones picked up a triple. Further sin- gles went to Jeff Ashton. Ryan McBride, Aaron Lycett, and Richardson. Port went on to win the opener 5-1. The defensive highlight making this week in baseball occurred when Jones, while playing first had a ball bounce off his glove directly to Dalton who was coming over to cover the base promptly stepping on the bag for the out. The next game had the squad up against Monkton whom they handily defeated by a 10-0 tally. Jones started on the rubber and went the distance al- lowing only one walk, five hits, and striking out seven. Versage again held a torrid bat as he picked up three singles. fF Ashton added a triple and single to the barrage while Matt Sturgess picked up a double. Singles went to Ryan McQuade, Jones, Peter McKitterick, and Nick Isaacs. The defence was crack- ing just as well with McBride at short- stop coming around behind second for a running catch. Not to be outdone Dalton made an over the shoulder grab and Sean Jeffrey nabbed a dying quail out in centre. The final game on Saturday saw the team take on Rockwood with Ryan McBride throwing the complete game allowing five hits while striking out sev- en. Richardson took over the big bat as he went two for three with a double and a single. McQuade, Ashton, and McKit- terick added singles to the tally leading 3 the team to a 9-1 win. Pete also made a nice shoestring catch out in the field during the fifth inning for the defensive play of the game. First thing Sunday morning the boys had to face a strong squad out of Water- ford for first place in the five team divi- sign. At thig peint both teams were go- ing on to the different 'A' semi-finals. McBride took the loss in this one but not before it looked like a real dog fight mid- way through with the score 2-1 for Port going into the fourth where Waterford took over a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately, the bottom fell out in the fifth as the opposi-- tion piled up 11 runs on 11 hits and two errors. Mick only gave up two walks and struck out two in the process. McQuade crushed a ball to left field for a home run in the first inning to get things started. McBride grabbed him- self a double with Versage, Ashton, Jones and Reid McTaggart all contrib- uting singles. McKitterick also laid down a nice bunt for a hit. This placed the team in second place for divisional play and they had to go on to meet the host Stratford team in the semi-final. With the score deadlocked at 0-0 after 1-1/2 innings the skies opened up and we suffered through a rain delay of 90 minutes. Adding insult to injury the diamonds were unuseable resulting in a trek across town. Jones pitched the entire game showing great control allowing just one walk, giving up nine hits, and striking out seven. The Stratford quick pitching seemed to hand cuff the bats that had been booming for so long with the ModJacks striking out 12 times, a team high, McQuade and Jones were the only two Port batters to pick up hits, each attain- ing a single. The end result was a 3-0 Stratford win, but the boys again displayed their talents on this weekend and were nor shamed at any time. To date this tour- nament has not yet been finished as rain again hit shortly after and sus- pended all further play for the day. League Play On Thursday night the team trav- elled to Fennell's Corners for a final tuneup before they had to travel to Kemptville for the Peewee Elimina- tions. Ryan McBride started on the rub- ber and pitched four innings allowing three hits, and one walk while notching five Ks. Jones followed in behind for the final three innings and struck out four while allowing no base runners in fac-. ing nine 'batters. Jeff and Chris each picked up two singles with McQuade adding a lone single. In picking up the 3-1 victory the ModJacks' league record now stands at 11 and one with them taking to the road for the next two. weeks. Fields of Dreams a Success More than 60 mens and mixed ball teams hit the fields this past weekend for the second annual Fields of Drems Slo-Pitch tournament. Although a lot of juggling and rescheduling of games had to be done with several teams unable to play on Friday the event was a success. Tournament co-ordinator Frank Fielding and his committee of Terry Coyne, Ron Rowntree and Rip Green managed to pull the event off without a hitch. The tournament was divided into three divi- sions, two mens, two mens masters and two mixed divisions with games being played at Scugog Centre, the lakefront diamonds, re Turnto Page17 ~~ KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR DEAN VAN CAMP, a Grade 6 student at R.H.
