4 PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 4, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Central Seven keeps changing with times Tight budgets making for 'perilous times' By Jeff Mitchell Port Dery Star The area's association for the developmentally handicapped i 1s adapting its operations to cope with "perilous times", board members were told at their annual general meeting recently. Central Seven board president Doreen Kendall sald funding restrictions and program changes have brought a new face to many of the associa- tion's efforts, but the phi- losophy of integration and progress continues. Mrs. Kendall gave her address to the association for community living's annual meeting, which was held in Sunderland June 22. "Where we've always done well is in the provi- sion of services or pro- grams to adults who have a developmental handi- cap," said Mrs. Kendall. "And before too long, we'll be doing a little more of that." She said, however, that continuing and revised programs will be carried out under increasingly tight economic times. Central Seven's base bud- get was cut 1 per cent -- about $18,000 -- by the former NDP government, and new Tory Premier Mike Harris has promised to be even tougher on spending, she said. "That puts the fiscal budget under real pres- sure, and given the elec- tion results, the cuts we've been seeing in recent years could become much worse," said Mrs. Kendall. "New fundrais- ing ventures might well be in order... It's clear we're entering into per- lous times." Among items on the association's agenda this year: 0 The opening this past Thursday (June 29) of the Adult Learning Centre in Port Perry, in expanded offices on Reach St. The clients with vocational aptitude will now be working more in the com- munity rather than in the old workshop, and the renovated facility will serve as a "home base". 0 Opening of a new Shier. group home in the area for six adults who will be displaced by the immi- nent closure of D'Arcy Place in Cobourg. Q Continuation of a a family "linking" program, begun last fall by Donna Herold, that provides par- ents of young children with disabilities with a , coming year.
