Be a Ts ll I Pe 16- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 11, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Srorz 1 p PORT PERRY STAR 4 PERRY STAR ORTS Fastball rep squad splits at home and on the road Scugog's Fastball Rep team split their last two games with a loss at home to Stouffville on June 30 and a road win in Thorn- hill on July 4. This gave the team a win in five of their last six games. Stouffville took advan- tage of a single, an error - and two passed balls to grab a first inning 1-0 lead. They took advantage of our uninspired play to roll on to a 7-1 victory. Tre- vor Doan came up from the sublist and played well. He scored our only run in the third inning after earning a lead off walk. Our hits were by Jeff Kane (2), Mike Koury (double), Tim Jones, Adam Lamb (bunt single) and Mike LeFort. Tim took the "L" and Mike LeFort gamely came in to pitch the last inning without a warmup. Tim al- lowed four hits, two walks, one HP and notched 7 K's. David (Crockett) Aker- manis made a nice catch in RF for our final out of the fourth inning. Devon How- sam and Matt Fraser were heads-up in their outfield coverage throughout the contest. : The team rebounded big time in Thornhill despite being shorthanded. The Leslie St. traffic foulup al- most gobbled up our team but eventually we arrived and got underway with a five run first inning. We rambled on to take further advantage of our short- handed hosts and ended up with a 15-4 win. The Legion offense was led by Tako Pilkey's two doubles, single, walk and "delayed steal" of third base. Matt Skerratt had two triples to go with a "slap" single. Mike LeFort had three hits. Cory McQuade hit the ball sol- idly for two hits as did Mike Wiseman. David Akermanis had a beauty bunt single and two walks. Mike Koury had two walks and helped out on defence in the catcher's position. Mike Wiseman threw out a runner at third and also threw out a runner at home to Mike Koury for a game-ending double play that was started by Matt Skerratt's throw out from short to 1B. Tim struck out eight of ten batters while not al- lowing any hits to support the team's strong batting effort. Bullett LeFort came out of the bullpen to get the save. Matt Fraser played well in LF and Dev- on kept coach Wiseman alert with a line drive to- wards first base!! The Port Perry Mer- chants Bantam fastball club travelled to Cobourg on Saturday, July 8 to par- ticipate in a local tourna- ment there and although they were quite success- ful, they came up just a bit short. This writeup is brought to you by Peer Pressure where the cus- tomer always comes first. The Merchants' first game of the day was against Napanee who is quite the powerhouse in bantam baseball. They have only lost two games to this point of their sea- son and the pitcher that we faced has only given up a total of six runs so far this year. To say that this was a tough game would be an understatement but even though we lost it did have some very good points in it. Scott Jeffery was outstanding in the outfield as he made sever- al superb catches and managed to pick up Port's only hit of the game. Brad Monsma got bowled over at the plate but hung onto the ball to record the out and Clay Brown pitched a good game but the Napan- ee batters are just too strong to contain. With Port's first loss be- hind them, they now took on Kingston. These two teams were evenly matched and it took until the third inning before anyone scored. Kingston took the early lead in the top of the third inning, picking up their first run of the game and a 1-0 lead. Port got that run back as Brad Monsma hit a single and when the Kingston player misplayed the ball Brad turned on the jets and smoked it around the bases to score and tie the game at one apiece. Led by the pitching of Jon Froats, the Merchant defence shut down King- ston the rest of the game while the offence got it in gear and tallied for two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to take a 4-1lead and the game. Jon Froats went the distance on the mound for the Mer- chants, picking up the win while striking out 10 King- ston batters. Doing the hitting for the Merchants in this game were Brad Monsma and Doug Short with two singles each, Derek Tindall with a sin- gle and a double and Jason Best was hit by a pitch and singled. After the Merchants' second game, there was a break in the action for some other activities such as the Gold Glove competi- tion, ball throwing at a ra- dar gun and a draw. Port Perry was well represent- ed in all the events as in the Gold Glove competi- tion, it was the Merchants' equivalent of Roberto Alo- mar, Jason Best doing his thing and coming away with a very respectable 'Merchants travel to Cobourg second place finish (well done, Jason). In the ball throwing, it was Lon Short who won the ladies category, pickingup a very nice shirt as a prize (she threw harder than a lot of the boys that were there), and the draw for a Chicago Black Hawks auto- graphed sweater was won by Grandpa Monsma. Congratulations to all the winners. The Merchants' third game of the day was against Campbellford, a team that we must play to qualify for our OASA fi- nals to be played in St. Mary's at a later date. Campbellford got things going first as they opened the scoring in their half of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Winchester Arms builds winning record The Winchester Arms Under 17 girls' soccer team is compiling an im- pressive record this sea- son. By June's end they have reached five wins, two ties and only one loss. On June 26th, Port's girls defeated Ajax United by a decisive 5-0. Later the same week the Winches- ter Arms squad travelled to Pickering for a game un- der the lights. The late game, the experience of playing under the lights a strong opponent held our girls off of the score sheet for much of the first half but Port Perry's girls came alive to win 4-0. In each game our Scu- gog squad played inspired soccer. The girls played near perfect positional soccer that allowed ILea- Anne Wakeford back-to- back shutouts. Solid de- fence provided by Alecha Cracknell, Yvette Hame- linck, Juli Brownson, Bon- ni-Jo Norton, Janine Hammond and Karen McConkey thoroughly frustrated the opposition. Port's midfield made up of Christine Cambers, Jenn Smith and Amanda Wake- ford dominated both games. Their determined efforts set up many quali- ty scoring opportunities. The Winchester Arms' forwards were quick to capitalize. Alesha Brow- nell, Laura Domik, Cate Lewis, Meghan Jamison, Janna Senyk and Lisa Bonser combined through- out the matches for sever- al key plays. This team is getting stronger with each game. The team ethicis solid and inspired individual efforts have been combined most successfully.
