The top scoring Port Perry team at last week's lawn bowling tournament was the team of Mike Sheridan, Joyce Storry and Cam Crawford, who were high one game winners. Just like the Jays, Gamblers hit the mid-season doldrums The Greenbank Gam- blers appear to have been following the efforts of the Blue Jays during the past two weeks as they went down to defeat to the Scar- borough Royals last Thursday night in Scarbo- rough by a 6-0 count. The Royals' Blair McBratney shut out the Gamblers on only two hits and claimed 13 Gambler batters as strikeout vic- tims during the contest. Don Beaton was the only Greenbank batter to solve McBratney's pitch- ing as he collected a pair of base hits and reached base in his third at bat courtesy of a low throw from the Scarborough shortstop. The rest of the Gambler squad came up empty al- though the Royals' right fielder made a great catch of a long Greg Newell drive in the mammoth Thompson Park outfield. Byron Baranieski was on the Greenbank pitch- ing mound and gave up a total of 12 base hits to the heavy hitting Royals. However, in light of the lack of Gambler offence, it would have taken a shut- out effort by Baranieski to gain a Greenbank point. The Gamblers have picked a poor time to go into a slump with the heavy part of the schedule coming up and also meet- ing the New Zealand Na- tional Team in Port Perry this Wednesday night. Also coming up quickly is the Ontario O.A.S.A. Elimination Tournament in Napanee on July 28, 29, 30. There is no easy way out of a slump and the Gam- blers will have to dig down and scratch and claw their way back to playing win- ning fastball. The next home game for Greenbank will be on Thursday, July 20 when Markham will visit the Gamblers for an 8 p.m. game at Janson Park. East Gwillimbury's next batter made Port pay for their costly error as he ho- mered to give East Gwil- limbury a 2-1 lead. This homer seemed to wake up the Merchants' bats as they picked up four runs in the bottom of the third in- ning to take a 5-2 lead. The Merchants contin- ued their onslaught as they picked up five runs in the bottom of the fourth in- ning and three more runs in the bottom of the fifth while the defence tight- ened up and only gave up one more run the rest of the way.
