"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 1, 1995 - 19 Scugog Scouting report Port Girl Guides end season with spring cook-out By Judie Cooper Port Perry District Girl Guides has seen another great year of guiding draw to a close. Our spring cook- le campaign was a huge success enabling many of the units to partake in many exciting adven- tures. Thanks again Port Perry for your support. The Sparks and Brown- le units took in such events as bowling, visits to the Toronto Zoo, Sun- dance Meadows just north of Seagrave, Northwoods Exotic Animal Farm in Seagrave and Nature Walks through our local parks. The 5th Brownies went to Wildwood Manor Ranch near Georgetown, a riding camp, this past weekend. I hear you had a "Wild" time 2nd Scugog enjoys busy summer A special thank you to Guy Guthrie for mak- ing the circumstances a reality for 2nd Scugog Scouting to receive a $500 donation from the Loyal Orange Lodge of Port Perry. Thank you to the Members of the Loyal Orange Lodge for making the first dona- tion towards our Scout- ingon the Water fund. July has been a busy month for the Island Scouting. Our Scout Troop participated in the annual Pineridge District Camp at Algon- quin Park during the weekend of June 30 to July 3. The boys partici- pated in many hikes and canoe training. They attended the Out- door Theatre and also enjoyed swimming in thelake. Thirteen Island Cubs attended Wildwood . Manor Ranch In Georgetown during the weekend of July 7 to July 9. The boys en- joyed horse back riding, swimming, hay rides, miniature golf and lots of food. As Group Committee Chairman for the Is- land Scouting Move- ment I would like to thank all the leaders and the parent helpers who donated their time to make these events a success. Yours in Scouting, Howard Wolf. and that the mosquitoes were as big as the horses. Ouch!!! The first Guides were off to eamp as well last weekend - to Emily Prov. Park. A fun and learning experience was had by all. The 2nd Guides enjoyed a weekend at Greenwood Conservation Area in May sleeping under cavass, taking in all day hikes, learning to cook over fires, on Coleman stoves, using buddy burners and reflec- tor ovens. Pizza sure tastes good when cooked by the Guides. The leaders of the group decided to master a reflec- tor oven this camp and fi- nally met with success. Look out girls, there's an- other way to cook food. They also spent a day at the Kortwright Center do- ing their Water Badge and a Pond Study. The 4th Guides braved the cold at the arena dur- ing the ArtFest and I know they were much appreciat- ed for selling coffee and treats. Good job girls. The 2nd Pathfinders have been a very busy group the last few months. They completed two ser- vice projects serving food at the Scout Banquet, at the Lions' Hall and serv- ing at the United Church Elders dinner. Thanks so much girls. It's so nice to have a helping hand. They had a great time at Wheelies and their year end celebration found them out for lunch andto a movie. They will have one last weekend at Heber Downs planned this month for those girls needing to com- plete their Bronze, Silver and Gold camps. Good luck girls. Watch out for those deerflies. On Friday, June 2 Port Perry District had their year end Parent/Daughter Barbecue at Emmanuel Pentecostal Church. Al- though the weather was hot and muggy we lucked out and were able to com- plete all the fun without a drop of rain falling. The merriment began at 6 p.m. with hot dogs and ham- burgers on the gnll. Al- though the propane ran out the spirit of the girls did not once everyone was full the fun and games pro- ceeded with sack races, dressup relays, potato on the spoon relays and of course the ever popular fill the jugs with water and wet sponge toss. The evening was topped off with ac ampfire joining the youthful voices of the girls with those of the me- lodic tones of the crickets and bullfrogs.
