Strategic plan for future of area farming By Cathy McKay, Strategic Plan Co-ordinator Forming a plan for the future of Agriculture in Durham Region - sounds difficult doesn't it? It will be a challenge but it is very important that as farmers, we have concrete goals and actions formu- lated for input into the po- litical process. We need to think about where we want our industry to be in the future. Last January, a plan- ning workshop was held to solicit ideas from the Agri- cultural community for a strategic plan for Agricul- ture in Durham Region. It was well attended and three themes emerged: 1. Education: the target group will be school chil- dren, although actions will be formulated to reach our urban adult neighbors as well. 2. Communication: im- provement within the ag- ricultural community will be the first priority, as well as an action plan to communicate agricultural needs to politicians and the community at large. 3. Marketing: identify- ing new markets and a properly marketed image for Agriculture in Durham Region are important to gain increased political strength and support for ourindustry. The three committees have been formed and plan to meet three to four | times over the next six months to come up with a wish list and action plan. If you have an interest in any of these areas, you are welcome to call me (905- 985-2096), or Joel Bagg, Agricultural Representa- tive, at the Port Perry OMAFRA office. Future planning and ac- tions will revolve around the theme of this simple mission statement: "The agricultural community will be a healthy, growing and vital part of Durham Region. We will accom- plish this through educa- tion, two way communica- tion and marketing of the image and products of the agricultural community."
