Game one was a heart breaking loss to the Willowdale Grizzlies that went nine innings with two international tie breaker innings. The Legion team took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning as the bats came alive but Willowdale tied it up with three of their own on some un- earned runs in the bottom of the sev- enth. In the first Geoff Grieveson, House League call-up player, stole third base in our second overtime chance but was stranded there. We left six runners on base through the con- test. Final score was a 4-3 loss. On offense we were led by Matt Sker- ratt's clutch double and two hits by Tim Jones. Geoff Grieveson, Mike Koury and Mike LeFort contributed hits as well. Walks were earned by Adam Lamb and LeFort. Matt Skerratt made a perfect sacrifice bunt in extra innings. Tim took the loss despite notching 19 strikeouts over the game, no walks and seven hits. Game two was yet another challenge and our "Blue and Gold" boys were equal to it as they earned a hard fought 3-2 win over Bramalea who had lost to Napanee earlier. The Bramalea pitcher did well in recording 15 strikeouts. Throughout the day our team helped our opponents by swinging on bad pitches and watching too many hitable pitches. Our offense broke through in the fourth inning when Mike Wiseman and Mike LeFort did use good batting eyes to earn walks and Jeff Kane had a clutch double. Matt Skerratt then cashed in Jeff with a single. Our other hits were by Tim (double), Wiseman (single) and Skerratt (single). "Windows" added a walk, Bullett had two. Defensive hi-lites included a tough flyball catch in RF by Devon Howsam who was looking right into the sun. Da- vid Akermanis was hustling to com- plete his outfield defensive assign- ments. Cory McQuade had a nice catch on a line drive to left field. Matt Sker- ratt and Jeff Kane combined to get two runners out at third. Tim pitched well again to earn the win including striking out the side in the seventh inning to strand the poten- tial tying run after a leadoff double. He finished with a three hitter, two walks and 13 strikeouts. A hot and tired group of Legionaires hit the field for their third game of the day one hour later. Tim answered the call to take the rubber but two errors led to two first inning unearned runs and Willowdale didn't look back on their way to their win. Our offense started a little comeback with a run of their own in the top of the second as Matt Skerratt doubled and scored on Tim's single. We stranded a Willowdale runner at third in the bottom of the sec- ond. The wheels started to fall off in the fourth as the battery of Tim and Matt Skerratt started to run out of gas. Mike LeFort and Mike Koury took over to play out the game. Matt Fraser made a solid catch out in left field early in the game to help our defence but giving up at least four un- earned runs would ensure our loss. Our hits were by Wiseman, Skerratt and Jones while LeFort and Tim Jones had walks. Overall, it was a good effort by our Port team as we are rarely being steam- rolled by other teams anymore. The team has a busy week ahead as they prepare for their O.A.S.A. elimination series against King City which starts at home on Thursday, July 20 at the Wa- ter St. S diamond, 6:30 p.m. Come on out and help fire up the team with your support! oo J PETER HVIDSTEN / PORT PERRY STAR ROCK 'EM, SOCK 'EM - A large crowd of auto enthusiasts attended the 9th annual Lions Club Demolition Derby held at the fairgrounds in Port Perry Saturday night. Above are the remaining cars in action during the final heat of the night. A car driven by Rick Clark made the last hit, taking first prize. Brian Goble took second and Ralph O'Connell was third. Twenty nine cars entered the demo derby, the largest entry the Lions have had to date. New Zealand cleans up The New Zealand Na- tionals came into Port Perry last week and won a double header over local fastball players. In the first game of a double header Wednesday evening the New Zealand squad defeated the Oshawa & City District League All Stars by a 7-1 score. In the second | half of the double header the Na- tionals defeated the Greenbank Gamblers by 6-0 decision. Hundreds of fans en- joyed two nights of great ball in Port Perry. The third annual Internation- al Challenge was put on by the Port Perry and Dis- trict Minor Ball Associa- tion. Gamblers fall to the New Zealand Nationals Last Wednesday night at Port Perry, the Green- bank Gamblers met the national team from New Zealand and failed to hold the visitors in check and dropped a 6-0 decision. Once again the Green- bank attack was in low gear as they managed only three base hits and a pair of walks against the visit- ing New Zealanders. Greg Newell had a triple and single in the game and Paul Goreski added a base hit which summed up the Gambler offense along with walks to Chris Burk- "holder and Don Beaton. But in the long run, it was the defense that took Greenbank out of the game as they committed three infield errors that cost them a total of four runs. Against a team of the Nationals Calibre that usually costs the ball game. Mark Goreski and By- ron Baranieski combined to hold New Zealand to a total of five hits but one hit was a home run and an- other was a triple. The Gamblers were dis- appointed they did not give the visitors a better game and would like a re- match. The New Zealand club is a classy world cali- bre team and proved to be good sportsmen as well as good players; and a credit to their country. In Oshawa City and Dis- trict league play last Mon- day night Greenbank ran their win-loss record to ten wing and three losses as they set down Oshawa Mickey Finns by a 4-2 score. Mark Goreski and By- ron Baranieski shared the pitching duties to give the Gamblers the win. Gore- ski allowed one hit in four innings with Baranieski giving up three hits in three innings. Paul Goreski led the hit- ting with a solid three for four game with Greg Ne- well, Troy Davey and Pe- ter Oosterholt each hitting safely. Oosterholts bases clearing double was the big Gambler hit driving in three runs.
