8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 18, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Festival Days come to town It may have seemed at times that the elements were conspiring against them, but the Scugog Chamber of Commerce is celebrating what they are calling a successful Festival Days weekend in Port Perry. The weather for the opening couple of days of the annual bash was less than cooperative -- a violent thunder storm curtailed opening ceremonies Thursday night, and Friday night, after a day of stifling heat and humid- ity, a tornado threatened to carry the big festival tent off to Nestleton -- but the weekend provided kinder climes, sald Chamber director JoAnne Cerovich. "I think in the long run, in spite of the weather, we had a successful weekend," she said Monday morning. "Each of the specific events were well-attended, and enjoyed by large crowds." Events such as the dog show, chil- dren's entertainment, a three-on- three basketball tournament and the cruise for classic cars all received "rave reviews", said Ms Cerovich. "Everything went off without a | hitch," she said of the numerous events that made up the busy week- Es As Ln A oe Jennifer McBride puts her all into the karate demonstration, held in front of the Queen St. stage Saturday. : end. | : "Over all, the Chamber was pleased Three-on-three basketball was a popular attraction for ! with the results." players and spectators alike on the courts down at Palmer Organizers are still assessing the decision this year to limit vendors to Patk Saturday. Water St., and limit registration to |g : locals only. At first blush it appears the vendors involved liked the local content theme, said Ms Cerovich. And using Queen St. for a display | of the Cruisin' Classics cars and a | sidewalk sale for local stores meant merchants were able to attract more | customers than they have in past | years, she said. "Generally, we got a good response to that," she said. "We certainly would have liked more participation from local vendors," Ms Cerovich added. She expects, though, that more ven- {| dors will take part in future Festival Days events. And the theme of supporting local business people and talent will con- | tinue, she said. | "As much as possible, we want local | vendors," said Ms Cerovich.
