The Legionaires opened Turnto Page 14 Brett Puckrin new assistant coach ModJacks to meet Eastern League teams this season By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The Port Perry Modacks will see plenty of new faces this year both behind the bench and on the ice. Modack General Manager Murray Parliament announced last week at a press conference that a new assistant coach had been appointed and that the six-team league would be meeting some new opponents on the ice when the 95/96 season gets underway. points with two teams going to be eliminated (from post season)," Parliament said. When training camp opens for the 1995 season the Modacks will also have a new coaching staff in place. It was announced at last year's banquet that former assistant coach Chic Carnegie would move to the head coaching spot with the departure of Brad Menzies. NEW ASSISTANT COACH NAMED The Modacks also officially welcomed aboard their new assistant coach last week as former Modack Brett In hopes of gaining more fan interest 'for games each Central Ontario Junior C League team will play three home and home series' with teams from the Eastern Ontario Junior C League. The Modacks, along with the other five Central teams, will each play a home-and- home series with the Campbellford Rebels, Picton Pirates and Brighton Sting of the Eastern Ontario League. The other three teams in the Eastern loop will hook up for matches with the Puckrin was introduced. Puckrin, who played for the Modacks during the 91/92 and 92/93 seasons was an assistant coach with the Key Bar Juvenile team last season and decided this year he wanted to take that {|competition up a 1 notch. ; The former '|Modack captain said he wanted to give back something to the organization and is looking forward to working with Carnegie this year. If all goes well, a full interlock with the two leagues will be looked at for the following year. The three teams which were chosen to entertain the local Junior C squads were decided by geographical location. The games will count as full league points for both leagues and as a result will up the regular 36- game schedule to a 42-game schedule. The season will also be extended to accommodate the games. The Modacks will also see an additional home and home series with Georgina, Uxbridge and Lakefield this season. Another change this season will see only the top four teams advance to the playoffs, instead of the traditional six. Last year the point spread between second place Port Perry and last place Little Britain was not that great. With Bowmanville out of the local league this year, Parliament sees a real scramble for playoff berths. "It will make those league games that much more important now. There will be a greater emphasis on the importance of getting the two assistant coach Brett Puckrin last week. The former MoJack didn't come aboard the Modack organization until Puckrin had retired, he said as a spectator he was impressed with the way he (Puckrin) played. "He was a quality player and I had no hesitation when his name was mentioned for assistant coach. He fit the bill for what I wanted in an assistant coach," Carnegie said. When Puckrin heard the MoJacks were looking for a replacement he approached Parliament, who said he knew Puckrin was a dedicated person with the background to fit the opening. "He 1s one of the best team players I have ever seen in the dressing room. He was a true team player and played regardless of injury," Parliament said. r 4 He is also pleased to be keeping with Modack tradition where former players are staying a part of the organization. HOME OPENER OCTOBER 1 The ModJacks will open their season this year on October 1 in Port Perry when they will host the Georgina Ice. The opener is sure to be a crowd pleaser due to the grueling seven-game series between the two teams during last year's playoff schedule. SPORTS REPORTS will continue in the WEEKEND STAR
