Pictured is some of the action from the games. On July 26 Greenbank Amsoil Synthetic Mites played Goreski Lakeside Recreation Mites in Port Perry in a thrilling game resultingin a 12-12 tie. Goreski's team played great resulting in the field with flys caught by Tyler Webb and Robbie Waller. Excellent pitching by Shannon Deering. Con- gratulations to Jamie Cor- neall who wallopped a home run. Amsoil's squad were strong at the plate with a super double hit by Scott Stone and a three run home run smashed by Cal- lan Nesbitt. What a difference it makes to a team when they work out of a slump and put a few wins on the scoreboard. Carrying over from last week's success, the Port Junior Merchants played two games without having a run scored against them. On Tuesday night, they played the home town rivals Port Antrim, a team the Juniors have previously never been able to defeat. Antrim's pitcher, Under- wood, did not give up a lot of hits, but the Juniors were able to put timely hit- ting together with great defence and win the game. In the second inning, with Card on third and Vander Slagt on second, Laird hit a long sacrifice fly ball. This hit, combined with a throwing error from the field, allowed both base run- ners to score. In the third, Antrim had a runner at third with none out, and only a great running catch by Smart in right field and a shoe string catch by Cochrane in left field kept the potential run strand- ed at third. In the fifth, with players at first and second with one out, Antrim threatened with a double steal. MacLennan made a great throw to Laird at third to get a critical out and took away the threat to score. The game remained 2-0. In the bottom of the seventh, the Port Juniors put two insurance runs on the board when Empringham, on with a fielder's choice, was scored by a Laird double who then crossed the plate him- selfon an RBI single by Moase. | This 4-0 game was the first time the Junior Merchants work out of their hitting slump Juniors beat the Port Antrim team who are definietly not ready yet to pass on the baton. This match-up will continue to provide the local fans with mixed loy- alties and with great ball games to watch. Card pitched seven innings with one strikeout, no walks, four hits, and no earned runs. On Thursday, the Brampton Juniors visited Port Perry and the Port Junior Merchants struck quickly in the first with three runs. Laird and Smart, on with singles, were scored by a Card op- posite field home run. The home team continued to score with a run in the sec- ond when Vander Slagt, on with a sin- gle, was moved to third on a McBride single and a MacLennan walk. He then- was sent home on a Smart sacrifice fly. In the fourth, Rich Burkholder, Ma- cLennan and Vander Slagt all crossed the plate for three more runs. Congratulations go to Card who earned the game's first star with an ex- cellent pitching performance and a three RBI home run. Card struck out 15 batters, allowed only one walk, one hit, and no earned runs to win the game 7-0. Greenbank Gamblers busy From Page 19 Goreski on Friday night. Key hits for the Gamblers were provided by Paul Go- reski, Don Beaton and Pete Oosterholt. Saturday morning saw Goreski start on the Greenbank mound again against Trenton and he went four innings when Byron Baranieski came on in reliefin a 3-3 ball game. In the fifth inning, the Trenton right fielder cracked a solo home run to make the score 4-3 but Baranieksi helped his own cause in the top of the sev- enth with a lead-off double and scored the tying run on Pete Oosterholt's line drive single, with pinch runner Mark Dicks bring- ing home the run. Trenton scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a single, a sacrifice and a clean hit up the middle. Final score Trenton 5. Greenbank 4. The Gamblers lost an- other close game to St. Thomas in the double knockout tournament and were eliminated by a 6-5 final score. Trevor Till and Ray Ku- rhan connected for Green- bank home runs with Brian Till having a pair of safe hits and Steve Dur- ham, Don Beaton, Paul Goreski and pitcher Byron Baranieski each hitting safely. However, Baranieski had a good news-bad news game on the pitching rub- ber as he fanned 15 St. Thomas batters during the game, including the St. Thomas clean-up bat- ter four straight times. However, the bad news was that the St. Thomas lead-off batter (Carl Boughner) went four for four against Baranieski including three home runs as he personally eliminat- ed the Gamblers from the tournament. The major storm in the Haliburton area three weeks ago has deprived Greenbank of the services of their leading hitter Greg Newell. Greg (who works for Bell Canada) has been working seven days a week to help re- store the telephone sys- tem to the north, and the Gamblers have sorely missed his potent bat their last seven games. Also, Chris Burkholder had to miss the final games of the Napanee tournament due to a per- sonal commitment which left the club with only 11 bodies for the OASA show- down. Still a lot of league ac- tion coming up and tour- naments in Toronto and Fenelon Falls plus the Oshawa City League Championship which will be held in Port Perry.
