"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, August 9, 1995 - 9 Man cited for bravery From Page 1 Mr. Rutherford. He and the other man checked under the truck's hood and saw flames by the firewall. "I said, 'We gotta get her out now." " The woman had been thrown from her seat and lay unconscious behind the passenger seat, said Mr. Rutherford. The two men worked quickly to inch her out of the truck, then up the embankment to the roadway. "When we got to the top of the hill, that's when the cab inside caught fire," said Mr. Rutherford. "We took her closer to the road because we didn't know if the truck would explode. "By the time the police got there, the whole truck was engulfed." The whole episode took just a couple of minutes. Mr. Rutherford said he and the other man sim- ply acted when faced with a situation that required quick thinking. "You don't know what's going to happen when you see flames," he said. "All we had to do was get her out of there." Police, ambulance and firefighters arrived on the scene and took over. The woman was taken by ambulance to Cottage Hospital in Uxbridge. Mr. Rutherford, after hanging around the accident scene for a while, asked if he could go home. The whole episode did- n't really sink in that 14 X 28° KIDNEY POOL North American Pool & Spa 1622 Scugog St., Port Perry (905) 985-3557 1-800-552-5854 Call for your replacement liner quotation Spas from $2497 JEFF MITCHELL/PORT PERRY STAR MY HERO: Dale Rutherford cuddles up with daughter Katelynn, 7, at his Port Perry home last week. The beach, which was posted as unfit for swimming on July 13, is still showing high readings of bactena, according to Tony Wong, of the Health Department. The last samples taken from the water were done during the week of July 24-26 and the bacteria read- ings are still very high, according to Mr. Wong. The health department has been taking samples from the beach since June and on July 6 the level of KE. Coli began to rise. The water is tested twice weekly to keep track ofany change in bacteria counts. The high level of E. Coli bacteria can cause ear, nose and throat infections as well posing other threats tobathers' health. As for Lakeside Beach, near Goreski's Marina, the water remains safe for swimming. "It is still very good. It's very encouraging," Mr. Wong said of the Scugog Island beach. The Region's Health Department is responsible for testing the water at both the Kinsmen Beach and at Lakeside Beach at Goreski's.
