"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, August 9, 1995 - 11 R > PORT PERRY STAR < URAL Roors Holiday was enjoyable Nestleton The long Civic Holiday week- end was a most enjoyable one - trust all arrived home safely if travelling on the busy highway. Nestleton United Church With a large attendance on Sunday, Aug. 6, ninth after Pentecost with Lawrence and Gwendolyn Malcolm the friend- ly greeters at the door. A fine at- tendance of worshippers for the service with Matthew Hill tak- ing the service. He spoke on "Idolatry Today" an excellent topic re - the worship of Idols - with excessive admiration. A subject of great interest to the large attendance. This makes one think - of interest to the large number present! Lawrence Malcolm read the scripture lesson from Hosea 11: 1-11 and the responsive reading was from Psalm 107: 1-9-43. Lovely hymns "How Great Thou Art," "Worship the Lord" and "O Father, All Creating," were sung. Offering received by Law- rence and David Malcolm. Ser- vice closed with "The Lord's Prayer" Benediction and sing- ing "Go Now In Peace." After the service all gathered in the Sunday School room and four ladies Carol Hill, Bernice Mairs, Carol Mairs and Barb Weir hosted a very lovely party for Mabel Cawker's 90th birth- day coming up on Wednesday, Aug. 9. It was very much en- joyed and a sincere thank you to the girlsin charge! Birthday Party Craig Holland of Edgerton Road had an enjoyable 12th birthday party with some little friends to help him celebrate in style. After lots of goodies and gifts galore they feasted on birthday cake and many other goodies. A very happy year ahead for Craig. Nestleton During The Week During the week Margaret Cornish and son Bill of Port Perry were guests to the farm to help celebrate Mabel's big day coming up. They brought a very lovely plant - A Persian Violet which is a very nice gift and is very much appreciated. Thank you folks for thinking of me. Alan and Eleanor Cawker and their cute little grand- daughter Chelsea Bernie of Oshawa, were out for brunch one day this week. My! Chelsea is a charming little girl and so much fun. We all love her. Sunday guests at the Cawker home were daughter-in-law Syl- via Cawker and daughter Chan- die of Scarborough. Also a friend Syliva Herman of Scarborough was also a guest. A great visit was enjoyed - then a tasty lunch and a good cup of tea before they left for home. So nice to see them once again. They are very busy people! Our good friend Ann Levin- son is at her own home now and doing very well. All the best to her for fine health. She would like to hear from friends at any time. Her address is 90 Fisher- ville Road, Willowdale, Ont. MZR 3J9. Regatta a great success Caesarea Albert Putsey Caesarea had their annual Civic holiday regatta this past weekend as it has had for some 63 years. My own opinion is that it was a great success. We were honored by having Ward Four Councillor Joyce Kelly and his worship Howard Hall cut the ribbon to open the regatta. Winners of the six major tro- phies were - Stephanie Holmes re: Wally the Clown trophy for the best costume in the kid's pa- rade. Our thanks to Helen Ste- venson and her aids for organiz- ing a great parade. Kevin Lockhart won the Sandy Hollingworth trophy for the men's open 100 yard dash. Craig Morgan won the Albert Putsey Sr. trophy for aggregate points for field day events. Total 14 points. Drew Wagland won the Har- ry Sears trophy for aggregate points in aquatic events, with a total of 31 points. Leigh Wagland won the Keeper trophy for "Ladies Ag- gregate Points" combined events with a total of 20 points. Drew Wagland won the Keep- er trophy for Men's aggregate points combined events with a total ot 32 points. Gosh I'm glad I didn't have to go to work tomorrow as I am tired and I'm sure many of our youth and parents must feel the same. Congratulations to the above winners and our thanks to all those who participated. My thanks to our collection cap- tains who covered the area ask- ing for donations and selling lucky draw tickets. Thanks to our youth John Vanstrien and Steven Paradis for aiding with the snack bar, erecting tents and moving so many items. I try not to mention names and I might forget one important per- son who has put forth the su- preme effort in helping with the Regatta. But I must mention Fran Benns and Joan Pearce and her brother George who was a great asset to me. The Hall Board also added a great addition to the regatta with their program for the small fry. For a few years the Pine Ridge Garden club held a home cooked bake sale at the regatta, then dropped it. Dorothy and Ruth Pearce picked up the chal- lenge and made $120.50, pro- ceed which goes into the Park Fund. 3 To everyone who participated and helped I can only offer my sincere thanks. It's you that made this regatta a success. Our top ten winners in our 54 prize draw were: barbecue - Lin- da Barreca, Caesarea; 21 piece garden set - Jennifer Creighton, Blackstock; portable 150 w quartz halogen extension light - Peter Lavin, Lindsay; grey af- ghan - Jean Holtby - Port Perry; 21 piece garden set - Jennifer Creighton - Blackstock; triple disc, dual cassette, AM/FM ra- dio - C. Gervais, Lindsay; three piece cooler set - John McKinnon Oshawa. Our thanks to all those who purchased tickets and remem- ber you must take that chance to win. I was sorry to hear of Ruth Pearce after working so hard at the bake table having a seizure and was taken to hospital. The family says she should be home on Monday or Tuesday. Best wishes to Ruth for a speedy re- covery. I was sorry to hear of Dave Geer, one of our firemen losing the end off his finger when on his lawn mower. A good rule is to keep your hands on the steer- ing wheel and not on the fender. You might hit a bump. Best of luck Dave. The report I have on Jason Parsons 1s, he has a fractured ankle, but it 1s not a critical break and he should be home on crutches in a couple of days. Best of luck Jason and may we see you real soon. Another mishap was Ruth Wardlaw's son who ran into a parked car on his bike and re- quired four stitches. No, I don't work in the Emer- gency Ward of the hospital but we did have an extra day this weekend, and things do happen. Joke of the Week An insurance agent was talk- ing to a prospective client at her home and pointed to an exqui- site vase on the mantle. "Do you keep anything in it?" he asked. "Yes, my husband's ashes". "I'm so sorry", apolo- gized the agent. "I didn't know he was deceased". "He isn't, he's Just too lazy to hunt around for an ashtray". Don't forget the golf meeting this Sunday at 1:30 p.m., 20 Putsey Drive.
