This writeup is brought to you by Wagg Roofing. The Merchants have been playing some excellent ball lately and wanted to continue their winning ways as they head toward their OASA playdowns lat- er this month. Scarborough drew first blood in this game as they opened the game up with two runs in the top of the firstinning. It took the Merchants until the sec- ond inning to figure out the Scarbo- rough pitcher and when they did they unloaded on him to the tune of five runs and took a 5-2 lead at the end of the sec- ond inning. Scarborough is a very good team and they just would not give up and kept on picking away at the Merchant lead with two runs in the top of the fourth and one in the top of the sixth to make it a 5-5 game going into the seventh and final inning. After Scarborough was held scoreless in their half of the seventh it was the Merchants turn at bat. Jason Best was leading off the inning and he showed why he is one of the steadiest players on the team as he once again came through with a clutch lead off single to get things going. Next up was Derek Tindall who was asked to sacrifice bunt to move Ja- son over to second. Derek laye! down the perfect bunt and Jason showed his heads up play as he went from first to third on the play and Derek beat it out to be safe on first. Derek then showed his blazing speed as he stole second. Now with runners on second and third with nobody out Doug Short was inten- tionally walked to put a force on at eve- ry base. Now with none out up stepped pitcher Marshal McQuaid with a chance at knocking in the winning run and this he did with a hard shot down the first base line to give his team a 6-5 victory. Marshal not only knocked in the win- ning run but was also the winning pitcher as he went the distance striking out five along the way. Doing the hitting in this game were Scott Jeffery with a single, Ryan Wil- liamson with a double and a walk, Ja- son Best with a single and a walk, Der- ek Tindall with a single, Doug Short and Jon Froats with two walks each, Clay Brown and Ryan Hawkins with a single each, and Marshal McQuaid led the way with three singles and a triple. The Merchants will put their win streak on the line next Wednesday, Aug. 9 against the big bad Peterbo- rough Thunder with an 8:30 p.m. start time.
