The tip of older branches and the fork between branches usually has a small thorn. The leaves have veins that curve towards the tip of the leaf. These leaves are a dark green and are late falling from the shrub. The seeds are very hard and found in pur- plish-black berries that stay on the shrub into the winter. Control of this shrub is required to allow oats to be grown "profitably. Resis- tance that has been bred into oat varieties has last- ed only a few years as new strains of the rust are be- ing found. The best control is to cut the shrubs down and treat the freshly cut stump with a mixture of diesel fuel and 2, 4-D to prevent the sprouting that occurs after cutting.
