"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, August 9, 1995 - 5 Shepherd working in constituency Summer's not a vacation for Durham MP By Jim Belyea The House of Commons may be adjourned for the summer, but Durham MP Alex Shepherd doesn't see his break from Ottawa as a vacation. In a recent interview he said he's dealing with a lot of con- stituent concerns, including problems with Canada Pension claims. The MP will also be attend- ing a meeting of the industry committee in August, and a meeting of the rural caucus. Locally, he's working on putting together a "think tank" on job creation. That group will focus on how to solve prob- lems relating to the structure of the economy. And this fall he's looking at putting on a seminar for small business on how to use the computerized information highway. On Sept. 23, Mr. Shepherd will bring Labor Minister Lucienne Robillard to Bowmanville, where she will speak about the upcoming Quebec sovereignty referen- dum. Mme. Robillard will talk about the role the federal gov- ernment is playing in the cam- paign, and what direction it should take. Prior to the Commons adjournment for the sum- mer Mr. Shepherd was busy nn Ottawa, tak- ing a number of stands on SHEPHERD igh profile issues. He: a Voted against his govern- ment's gun control legislation aAbstained from a vote on a bill introducing harsh penalties for those convicted of hate crimes, and 4 Opted out of the MPs' pen- sjon plan. But Mr. Shepherd bristled when asked if he 1s leaning toward the Reform Party's stance on issues. He said 1t's wrong to make comparisons, describing the Liberal party as a national political entity -- unlike more parochial Reformers. He said he has chosen not to collect an MPs' pension while his party claws back pension funds from Canadians, and said he voted against the costly gun registry because it would be diverting government funds from the country's sick and elderly. The Canada Pension plan is not sustainable in its present form, said Mr. Shepherd, who couldn't agree with politicians continuing to receive lavish pensions. While away from his Ottawa office for the summer Mr. Shepherd is working out of his busy Oshawa constituency office. He predicted that when par- liament resumes in the fall the Liberals will focus on job cre- ation, the economy and the Quebec referendum.
