Ont - Pam Hickey Editorial Comment Medicare cuts next? Anyone concerned about the new provincial government getting down to business in its openly declared war on overspending can rest easy. Since taking office the Tories under Mike Harris have been cutting, slashing and eliminating. In some instances, it's a clear attack on what the Conservatives see as wrong-minded programming. In others, it's simple political revisionism, amounting to elimination of programs established by the previous government and killed on ideological grounds rather than cost analysis. While the Tories tear into government spending though, it would be best for them to keep an eye to the west. In Alberta, where celebrated debt-buster Ralph Klein has been making the news with his unflinching cost- cutting measures, cracks are beginning to appear. The people were with him -- and many, granted still are -- until he began to dabble with what most Canadians feel to be a sacred trust: | medicare. It was recently announced that on hospital in | Edmonton has eliminated surgery. Surgery. | J And in recent polls a vast number of Albertans reported being adversely affected by health care cuts, a significant number of them seniors. Now doctors in Alberta, who have been silent for some time, are wondering aloud about the | wisdom of basing medical decisions on procedure and priorities on cost, rather than need and health benefits. Make no mistake: Health care in Ontario is the largest government expenditure, and Mr. Harris and his Tories will have it in their sights. When that comes, it's going to be noisy. The kids really got a kick out of the Teddy Bear Picnic on Friday. The stories were great and they loved the hot dogs and other treats. Workers must have been mighty hot after being by that barbecue for so long! Saturday we came back into town and walked around, saw the magic show, Karate demo, and the kids loved the Amazing Maze! They had a ball on the rides! (Mom didn't!) I heard mention of people complaining about REMEMBER 45 YEARS AGO Thursday, August 10, 1950 The William Taylor Memorial Trophy is a handicap race trophy for sailing and was won by Georgia Brock at the Caesarea Regatta held this year. Bill Jeffrey won the prize for Douglas Adams, background Days Festival Days and also read a letter to the editor in which the writer stated Festival Days was a job "poor- ly done." My feeling is if they don't like the way it was done, maybe they could volunteer their help next year. It has been my experience with organizing events in the past that it is those who don't want to help out that complain the loudest! Great job and thanks for the Chamber's hard work! Kim Kelly, , and D. J. Adams attend to business behind an elaborate wooden divider in the front doorway of the Adams Insurance Office on Queen Street.
