14- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 15, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" "JEFF MITCHELL/PORT PERRY STAR _ DOUBLES TOURNAMENT: Port Perry's Tennis club was a busy place this past weekend when a doubles tournament for both men and women was held. Above, finalists from both divisions pose after the event. In front row from left are Winnie Tobin and Laurie Cooper, who prevailed over Jackie Dusenbury and lise Stiller. Standing are mens' finalists Jay Neill, Ken Elliott, Chris Linton and Adam Johnston. At left, Adam Johnston returns a serve on the way to a win for himself and his partner, Chris Linton: Legion Squi Port Perry/Scugog's Rep Squirt fastball team have been trying to gather mo- mentum as they prepare for their Provincial OASA Championship appear- ance. They successfully bumped off two of their league opponents this week and almost stole a victory over the number two team in their 16 team York Durham League. On August 8, the Blue and Gold hosted and beat Markham in a tight 7-5 victory. Mike LeFort showed his best control of the season in this pitching start and in addition to just two walks he recorded eight K's. Tim Jones came on in relief as Markham tied the scored in the sixth inning at five-all and K'd four of the six batters he faced. Three unearned - runs by our visitors had threatened to overshadow Mike's fine start but the Legionaires rallied them- selves in the bottom of the sixth thanks to Adam Lamb's double and consec- utive hits by Cory McQuade and Mike Le- Fort (one of his two in the game). Catcher Matt Skerratt had two hits (one triple) while Jeff Kane and Mike Koury doubled. Tim sin- gled in our first run in the second. Luke Pilkey had a walk and stolen base. Da- vid Akermanis was robbed on adrive to CF. The team went to Vau- ghan on the ninth, to chal- lenge this squad that had beaten them handily on two previous encounters. Our squirts jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the second. Tim had notched four of his 11 strikeouts by this stage and Adam had han- dled a hot grounder and third well. Unfortunately, errors crept in as the game unfolded and Vaughan ended up with a 5-3 victo- ry. Three of their runs were unearned. Tim and Matt combined for a tagout at home in the third. Tim allowed seven hits while showing fine control with just one walk. Adam led our attack with two hits while Mike Lefort and Tim had our other hits. Devon How- sam, Mike Koury earned walks. "Crockett" Aker- manis had a walk and came around to score in the fifth to bring us just rt fastball one run back. Overall, this was a far more respectable loss than our previous meeting but it was a shame that our five fielding errors and a couple of mental errors prevented us from notch- ing a major upset. The team rebounded for a 9-1 win over Oshawa on August 10 to end a busy week of ball. Matt Sker- ratt was a perfect three for three with a walk to lead our batters. Adam and Mike Koury were full val- ue with four walks each. Tim had two hits while Mike LeFort doubled in our three run first inning. "Hawk" Kane singled and walked. Cory had a hard liner to the outfield and Geoff Grieveson smacked a hard infield grounder. Luke Pilkey showed im- proved batting form thanks to his hard work at practice. Tim pitched well for the win and battled some tough umpire calls for 11 strikeouts, five walks and a zero-or-one hitter. Matt and "Bullet" Le- Fort combined for a throw- out of a runner at second as well as a forceout at ers win two of three home. Oshawa's only run was unearned and eventu- ally scored on a passed' ball. Geoff helped out at the "hot-corner" to show some good versatility. "Lambo" used his quick feet for a tricky delayed steal to add to his previ- ously recorded straight steal. The "Blue and Gold" continue to improve over- all in their skills and strat- egies and are working hard to try and make a re- spectable showing in their upcoming OASA Provin- cial Tournament. Many parents have been helping out with the team recently and the players are appre- ciative of their contribu- tions. Thanks Moms and Dads!! went down in order. make it a 2-2 game. The Thunder got back into the game as a leadoff walk came around to score and The Merchants once again retook the lead as Jason Best came through with a Merchants take Thunder 4-3 The Port Perry Merchant Fastball Club played host to the Peterborough Thunder on Wednesday, Aug. 9 and after a hard fought game came away with a 4-3 victory. Writeup sponsored by Monsma Electric. The Merchants got off to a rough start as the Thunders first two batters got on due to errors. The Merchants dodged a bullet here as only one run came around to score giving the Thunder a 1-0 lead. The local boys settled down after this and in the bot- tom of the second inning they strung together three singles and a walk to take a 2-1 lead. With the bases loaded and nobody out the Merchants had a big chance to break this game wide open but couldn't do it as the next three batters clutch triple with two on and two out. This gave the local boys a 4-2 lead and they wer- en't about to give it up. The Thunder managed to pick up one more run in their half of the sixth inning but that was to be all as the Merchants shut the door and made it a 4-3 final. Clay Brown was on the mound for the Merchants and pitched his best game of the season, going the distance striking out three and inducing numerous pop-ups. Doing the hitting for the Merchants were: Jon Froats and Owen St. John with two singles each, Ryan Williamson and Clay Brown, a single and walk each, Doug Short with a single, Derek Tindall with a walk while Ryan Moynes had two walks. The Merchants next and last home game is on Wednesday, Aug. 16 against Vaughan with an 8:30 p.m. start time. This is the Merchants last league game and last game before they head out to St. Marys for their 0.A.S.A. playdowns. ee
