16- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 15, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Peewee MoJacks off to OASA tournament On Aug. 11, Port Perry/Scugog's rep ModJack fastball team were in Elmira to represent our zone in the Ontario Provin- cial Softball Peewee Championships. Hopes were high that our squad would give a good account of themselves and this was accomplished as the team finished with a two win, two loss record at the tour- ney. Game one was a heartbreaker 1-0 loss to Sydenham (who were tournament champions) who pushed across a run in their last at-bat for the win. Defensive hightlights included a third inning throw- out to second by catcher Jeff Ashton to Darryl Dalton. In the fourth inning Sydenham had threatened by getting a runner to third with no outs. Chris Jones and Jeff decided to meet the pressure by getting the next three batters on strikeouts. Mike Versage batted three for three with a triple to lead the attack. Chris Jones had two hits while Mark Richard- son singled in the seventh. Ryan McQuade had our only walk of the game. Chris Jones pitched a complete game with five hits and two walks to go with his 13 strikeouts. The team was a little down after a tough loss but rebounded in game two against Fergus. The MoJacks found Fergus pitch- ing more to their liking as McQuade (two hits), McBride (two hits), Versage (three for four) and Jones (three for four) all trip- led. Jeffdoubled and singled. Reid McTag- gart had two hits and two walks. Ryan McBride went the distance for the pitching win with a line score of two hits, seven walks and three strikeouts. Matt Sturgess, Nick Issacs and Peter McKitterick came off the bench to get some action in their first OASA tourna- ment exposure. Aaron Lycett and Sean Jeffrey patrolled their outfield defensive territory well throughout the contest. Fi- nal score was 14-3 win for Port Perry. Facing elimination still, the team then took to the field for their third game of the day. Darryl, Jeffand the other OASA vete- rans kept our emotions high as we faced FSR ULES ARR Port Perry Minor | Hockey Registration | & Skate Exchange | 1995-1996 Season North Fredericksburgh. The ModJacks broke the ice in the first inning as superhot Mike Versage doubled and came around on Ashton's double. Ver- sage finished with another three for three game with our other hits from McQuade and Jones. Chris (Bart) Monsma bravely came in to pinch run the base paths de- spite having a healing hand fracture. The MoJacks prevailed with a 3-0 shut- out victory and would "live to fight an- other day." Chris Jones got the win for Port as he chucked 16 strikeouts while al- lowing just three hits and three walks. He seemed determined to preserve the shut- out as he K'd four of the last five batters in the game. After a short night's sleep, the team faced the host Elmira team who were streaking along themselves with wins over Paris and St. Mary's. As expected, they played solidly in front of their home fans and thus bounced the ModJacks out of competition with their 3-1 win. Port took the lead 1-0 in the fourth as McQuade got aboard on an error, was bunted to second by Dalton and scored on one of Versage's two hits. (Mike hit an amazing 0.840 for the tourney with Chris' new TPS bat!) Elmira tied it up in the fifth thanks to two singles and a wild pitch. They took the win in the sixth on a single, error and triple. Our never-say-die MoJacks didn't Just roll over however, as they loaded the bases but couldn't cash them in. Ryan McBride pitched well through five innings and didn't allow a hit till this in- ning. He finished with four Ks to go with two walks and four hits. A nice job for his first OASA rep provincial fastball tourna- ment! "Jonesy" mopped up for the last in- ning in relief. Reid had a nice game with a sacrifice and about five flyball putouts. He also may have been safe on a surprise first to third run off a bunt play but the call didn't go our way. Chris Jones alertly tagged out arunner who over ran first base. Our remaining MoJack hits were by McQuade, Jones and Ashton. Jeff used some of that speed that helped him win SPORTS SQUIRT CHAMPS - % 3% J. PETER HVIDSTEN / PORT PERRY STAR Antrim House defeated Manns Cornhuskers 23-22 Saturday at the Blackstock Fairgrounds to win the Cartwright Baseball Squirts championship. Members of the winning team are, front left, Emma Marshall, Stephen Delore, Steven Vine, Josh Ferguson, Amanda Lowe and Lawrence MacDonald. Back left, coach Steve Kingswell, Stephanie Mason, Stefanie Kingswell, Ryan Nesbitt, April Bonsma, Alicia Sauder and Debby Kingswell (coach). The Antrim squirts were winners of all four tournaments they played in this year. the tournament base-running contest over 23 other competitors (rounding the bases in an incredible 11.55 secs.) to beat out a bunt. It's always better to win your last game at an OASA tournament but it wasn't in the cards this season. The experience gained by McBride, McKitterick, Nick Is- sacs, Jeffrey, Richardson, Monsma, Ly- cett and Sturgess should ensure that our Port Perry teams will be even tougher to deal with in 1996 on the provincial level. The ModJacks have one regularly sched- uled league game left on Tuesday, Aug. 15 at the south diamond, Water Si. at 6:00 p.m. and will close out their season on Aug. 25 weekend with the York-Durham League Finals.
