Will live in Ontario for 10 months Port Perry couple hosts student from Finland By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The first thing Alisa Markjarbi noticed about Canada was the enormous number of people that live here. "It is very big and there are a lot of people who live here." That first impression came from the 16-year-old Finland girl who made her way from Toronto to Port Perry last week. Alisa will spent the next 10 months in Port Perry as part of an exchange program with the Youth For Under- § standing organization. While in Canada, Alisa will be making her home with Bob and Sue Dalby. The Port Perry couple arranged to have the Finish stud- ent stay at their home for the duration of the program. The aim of the project is to allow the students the opportunity to learn about other cultures. It also allows the Dalby family to experi- ence a different way of life through Alisa. "I didn't know much about it (Canada). But, the nature is beautiful. I like it," Alisa said. In September Alisa will enroll at Port Perry High School, where she will be a Grade 12 student. She speaks some English, noting that it is taught in the Finish schools. The Dalbys looked at the biographies of a number of exchange students and settled on Alisa. "She most suits our family. She likes to do the same things we do," Mrs. Dalby said. Those activi- ties will include weekend trips to the family trail- er in Buckhorn, boating, skiing, skating and camping. Although the Dalbys do not have a definite itinerary planned for their new family i member, Ottawa, Niagara Falls and a Toronto Blue Jays game are definitely in the plans. Alisa wants to see everything there is to see while in Ontario, includ- The Dalby family, Mike, 13, Sue, Bob, Kevin, 8, and Angela, ing a Toronto The internation- absent from photo, will host Finland student Alisa, second from Maple Leaf al organization right, at their Port Perry home for the next 10 months as part of a game. When the exchange fell through they realized they were disappointed and decided this year to invite a student into their home. Alisa arrived in Port Perry on August 9 after a nine- hour flight from her native Lahti, Finland. Sixty stud- ents from Finland made the trip overseas where they will each remain until the end of the school year. Like all the exchange students Alisa had her choice of countries to visit and Canada came out on top. She said she has lots of books about Canada and had seen pic- tures, that attracted her to the country. people in Finland, is a huge hockey fan. There are 10 Finish students spending the next year in Canada, and the organization also plans a get togeth- er for all of the students. Alisa describes Finland as a little country -- it has a total population of 5 million -- with lots of forests. The winters are cold and the summers short, she said. Although Alisa has ventured to Norway, Sweden and Spain in the past, this is her first trip overseas and she wants to make the most of it. "I want to see everything," she said. Alisa doesn't think she will even get homesick during her stay here, but just in case the Dalbys are prepared to invite Alisa to prepare Finish meals and rent movies about Finland if the feeling does set in.
