A er OS cer = eR ee) A 4- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 15, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Pre-registration by August 19 Goreski's poker run will raise funds for disabled By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Ahoy, boaters: Here's your chance to sper.d a great day cruising Lake Scugog, win prizes, and raise money for a good cause. Goreski's Marina, in conjunction with other area marinas and businesses, is holding a Poker Run next weekend (Aug. 26), and they're hoping for a large fleet of boats, cruisers, and personal water- craft to take to the waters of Scugog to raise money for the Community Association for Riding for the Disabled (CARD). CARD, which is run out of North York and serves clientele from a large area including Scugog, provides therapeutic riding opportunities for a wide variety of disabled people. The therapy helps the disabled with balance and coordina- tion, and can help improve muscle tone, said Margaret Wanless, a CARD official and organizer of next Saturday's poker run. The association relies on fundraising to continue with the valuable work it does, she said. CARD's annual budget is $450,000. "We have very little (government) funding, so the rest we raise through rider fees, membership fees, and dona- tions," said Ms Wanless. "This poker run is the first boat thing we've done." The run gets under way at 9 a.m. next Saturday and should conclude around 4 p.m. with a barbecue and prize ceremony for participants. The five stops along the route include Goreski's, Port Perry Marina, Scugog Island Marina, Westshore Marine, and a boat that will be situated by a channel marker. Registration fee is $35 per vessel and that covers the captain, first mate and one child under 12. Additional passen- gers will cost $6 each. A host of prizes have been donated by local business, and include marine acces- sories and gift certificates, said Goreski's employee Christine Smelt, who's also helping organize the run. "We've had a lot of inquiries about it," she said last week. "It's a great day. It's for a great cause, and there are lots of great prizes." Anyone who wants to take part in the poker run is asked to pre-register by this Saturday, Aug. 19. You can call Goreski's at 985-9763, or any of the other marinas mentioned in this story.
