\ 18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 22, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SrorTs PPMHA registration The 1995-96 season for the PPMHA is fast ap- proaching, with registration set for this weekend, Fri- day, Aug. 25 from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. Our skate and equipment exchange will also be of- fered this year with equipment accepted on Thurs- day, Aug. 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. The season will get underway on Sept. 5 with power skating under the direction of Al Bonner. A full power skating schedule will be available at registration. The OMHA has a new card system in place this year to replace the base card system from last year that was not successful. Part of the problem was in- complete information so according to OMHA policy, both parent/guardian and player must be present to register and hopefully for the last time birth certifi- cates and health card numbers must be available. We will not be accepting registration if these conditions are not met. This year you will be offered the opportunity to pay in full at registration the discount rate or pay the full rate with half down at registration and the balance in a post dated cheque payable on or before Nov. 1, 1995. Please take the time to fill out a volunteer form, as we arein dire need of help in many areas. A list wil be available for crown and anchor duty at the fair, as our executive are so busy preparing for the upcoming sea- son it is unreasonable to ask them to do multiple shifts with a membership of over 500 available to help. Please indicate how you can help. In order to keep registration to a minimum we dealt with a tight budget as in previous years and the re- sulting increase reflects the actual increase in ice time cost and OMHA fee increases. We have named Jamie Menzies as coach, David Menzies as manager and Andrew Steele as trainer for our Juvenile team this year. Please note Juvenile players, even those trying out for the MoJacks, come and register and we will hold your cheque until you start to play because we must have a minimum of 15 players registered on paper before the September scheduling meeting in order to be involved in the league schedule. We will not be registering players late into the season as in past years, so if you are in- terested please come and register this weekend. e 3M Scotchguard * Broadloom Stearn » Upholstery Clearing ° Loose Rugs 985-8552 Durbar Cartwright ball reports Jessica McLaughlin and Shawn McNamara for fill- ing in as last minute re- placements. Pam Goble of the Hawkeyes showed her power hitting two home runs. Other offense stars for Campbells were the three hit games supplied by Amanda Drew, Elisha James and Cameron Vern- est. Sin- gles were hit by Alex McLaughlin, Jesse McKendry, Steve Paradis, David Crouter, Jenn Bell and Squirt call-up Stefa- nie Kingswell. Bantams wind up regular season The Port Perry Merchant Bantam fastball club wound up their regular season schedule on Wednesday, Aug. 16 with a convincing 16-1 victory over Vau- ghan. This writeup is brought to you by Kirby Structures. Things didn't start out too good for the hometown Merchants as Vaughans first batter doubled and scored when their number two hitter followed with a single giving Vaughan an early 1-0 lead. That was all the offence that Vau- ghan could muster as Jon Froats, Mar- shal McQuaid and Clay Brown all shared in the pitching duties allowing only two more hits the rest of the game. The Merchants got things going in their first at bat as lead off batter Scott Jeffery hit an in the park home run to tie the game at one a piece. Scott's hus- tle around the bases inspired the boys and they rallied for three more runs in the first inning to take a commanding 4-1lead. The second inning had the boys con- tinue their hot hitting as they picked up another two runs to now extend their lead to 6-1. - The third inning was the clincher for the Merchants as they batted around collecting another six runs to make it now 12-1. The big blow in this inning was a booming home run over the fence off the bat of Marshal McQuaid. The fourth inning was a quiet one as the Merchants failed to score but in the fifth it was Marc Versage who blasted one out into the darkness and trotted around the bases with his second dinge of the season. The Merchants picked up one more in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth to round out the scoring at 16- 1. Doing the hitting for the Merchants were: Scott Jeffery with a home run and a single, Jon Froats who almost got the cycle as he walked, singled, doubled and tripled, Jason Best continued to swing a hot bat picking up two doubles and a walk, Marc Versage with a boom- ing home run blast, two doubles and a single, Doug Short with a single, Brad Monsma was a welcome sight coming back off the disabled list picked up a sin- gle and a walk, Ryan Hawkins tripled, doubled and walked, Ryan Moynes and Derek Tindall showed good eyes at the plate as they each picked up a walk, Owen St. John had a double, Ryan Wil- liamson kicked in with a single and Marshal McQuaid did the home run trot. With the win in the books it meant the end of the regular season schedule for the Merchants who wound up with as very respectable 12 wins against five losses giving them a .706 winning per- centage. Four of the teams losses came in May and they finished off with an eight game winning streak. The league will wrap things up at a final tourna- ment to be held in Oshawa on Aug. 26 and 27. The Merchant ball club would like to thank all the faithful fans that came out to cheer us on at our home games, it was truly appreciated. g PORT PERRY STAR started slow and trailed 4- Sheva | EEE STAT-SHEET nings.
