"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Event set for Sept. 17 Terry Fox Run organizers look to public for assistance Once again this year, or- ganizers of Port Perry's Terry Fox Run for cancer research are looking to the community for help with the run day barbecue. Organizing committee member Laura Elliott said last week that contribu- tions of food and money are being sought for the barbecue, which welcomes home the runners, jog- gers, cyclists and roller bladers who will take to the five and 10-kilometre course Sept. 17. It's a way of saying thanks to those who par- ticipate, and provides a fo- cal point for activities af- ter the events, as participants cool down and enjoy the proceedings. "It's kind of recognition and a thank you to the runners and walkers and bikers," said Ms Elliott. Last year there was a great response from local merchants, and organiz- ers are hoping for the same this year, said Ms El- liott. "We had quite a number of businesses and individ- uals donate some money or food toward it," she said. "The average was about $50 per business, but any- thing would be appreciat- ed." If you can help, please call Ms Elliott at 985-2571 or 666-6328, or Leo Plue at 986-4241. Organizers are also helping boost proceeds from this year's fox run with the sale of hats, T- shirts and sweat shirts. Bearing a colorful design and the Terry Fox Run logo, the hats and shirts will be on sale at Ivy League on Queen St. in Port Perry in the weeks leading up to the event. Hats are $10, T-shirts go for $15 ($10 for kids' siz- es), and the sweats are $30. Sweats have to be or- dered and paid for in ad- vance, and all proceeds go to the Terry Fox Founda- tion for funding of cancer research. Organizers meanwhile are putting the finishing touches on the course for this year's run, which has been changed from that of last year's successful event. The five and 10- kilometre courses will be- gin at the fairgrounds on Reach St. and wind their way through Port Perry and Prince Albert, con- cluding at the fair- grounds. Those participat- ing in the one kilometre walk, meanwhile, will do a circuit of the track at the fairgrounds.
