"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" adie ITTY, YY PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 29, 1995 - 11 Goreski's Poker Run draws 280 entries, raises $3, 500 By J. Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star Dixieland music drifted through the air, mixed with aroma of hamburg- ers cooking on a barbe- cue, as boaters returned from a poker run organ- ized by Goreski's Marina last Saturday afternoon. It was a carnival-like atmosphere that greeted the boaters and their guest when they re- turned to draw their pok- er hands, after spending a day on Lake Scugog. The event attracted 83 boats and personal watercraft, and by days end, more than $3,500 had been raised for the Community Association for Riding for the Disabled (CARD). Margaret Wanless, one of the organizers and an official with CARD vas extremely pleased with the turnout and wanted to thank all those who contributed. All the prizes and food was donated, which helped to make the day such a success. Boats entering the Poker Run paid a $35 registration fee, plus an additional $5 per passenger. Local participant Councillor Ken Gadsden who took along his wife, Councillor Ken Carruth- Loa ne Fo wR 3 wg Margaret Wanless, Donna Best, Len Goreski and Ron Goreskli (kneeling) tabulate the winners in last Saturday's Poker Run held at Goreski's Marina. ers and Regional Coun- cillor Marilyn Pearce and husband Rick all agreed it was a great day. In all, about 280 people took part in the event rid- ing in more than 80 boats or watercraft. Winners of the event were as follows: * Personal Watercraft - John Gray. * Boats 20' And Under - Ronald Skinner. * Boats 21' And Over - Vern McGill, who was also the overall winner of this years event. Pressure's on arenas An extraordinary turn- out for Port Perry Minor Hockey registration over the weekend has Regional Councillor Marilyn Pearce concerned over ice time availability in the township. Councillor Pearce called on council to make a recommendation that al- lows Scugog residents first chance at any availa- ble ice time at both Scugog and Blackstock Arenas. Blackstock Arena has traditionally rented its ice time to outside user groups, often bumping Scugog kids from thce. This year the registration is higher, with more Ward 4 kids than ever register- ing, and she believes now is the time to restrict use to local groups, with any remaining open time allot- ed for out of town users. Over the years the ques- tion of ice time has become more prevalent and Coun- cillor Pearce is concerned it will get worse. She said the need for another ice pad is even more obvious now. "Having the ice availa- ble in Blackstock is more important than ever," she said. While Ward 4 Council- lor Joyce Kelly and Ward 1 Councillor Ken Carruth- ers wanted to give the property owners an oppor- tunity to enter an agree- ment including a security deposit and letter of credit until the rezoning was complete, the remainder of council overturned that motion. The decision will see five employees, all of whom were present at council, thrown out of work. The Mammones, own- ers of the property, first appeared at council in May of 1994, seeking a re- zoning of the land, located in east Neslteton. Council- lors approved the zoning for the controversial sign shop in November last year, contingent on a num- ber of factors. Council asked for site plans from the owners but had been rebuffed several times. In May council gave the company a reprieve allow- ing an additional month to produce site plans for the property. Concerns had been raised over the industrial use of the property as well as the condition of the land and its effect on adja- cent neighbors. x OO AL e Krickets SO e No No No EE ip Eh ban 197 Queen Street, Port Perry Hours: Mon. to Sat. 9:30 to 5:30, Fri. until 8:00 & Sun. 12 noon to 5:00 SPECIALS - e | ouis Garneau Track Suits Gate Ends Sunday, Gapiombek 10. hid Although Mayor Ho- ward Hall had visited the site recently and reported it to be in much better con- dition, council was con- cerned that if a rezoning was granted there was no guarantee the land would stay tidy. 20% OFF Goodwrench Service ZZ. 3 3 I L.O.F., ROTATE, AND BRAKE INSPECTION SPECIAL COMBO $46.95 MAINTENANCE TUNE-UP (3- and 4-cylinder vehicles) 6-cyl. $89.95*, 8-cyl. $99.95". * Replace spark plugs. e Check air and fuel filters, belts, hoses and PCV. « Visual battery check.
