The weather was absolutely ideal, the crowds excellent and the events went off in clock- work precision. The Fair was opened with a packed demolition derby which was filled with outstanding action. Several heats seemed to last until the cars would be demolished and yet on they thumped. After all the noise ended, the win- ner was declared as Brad Adams from Pontypool. The 4-H Achievement Days in the Livestock sections were well attended with many proud parents and grand- parents present. The Parade was led by Dale Page in his travelling music box followed by a large variety of decorated bikes, wagons, autos, floats and horses. David Simser of Fene- lon Falls, President of the Ontario Association of Ag- ricultural Societies offi- cially opened the fair with remarks from District Homecraft Representa- tive, Ivy Succee of Peterbo- rough. The Exhibit Hall was filled with a great display of baking, sewing, and crafts which created keen competition in most class- es. The champion quilt was won by Evelyn Morri- son of Blackstock. The arena held the grain and vegetables classes as well 4-H exhib- its and a large variety of concession. Old MacDon- ald's farm operated by Glenys Gotham thrilled old and young alike. The sheep display and demon- strations fascinated many who enjoyed watching the spinning and other activi- ties. The Kid's World, which included the Mutt Show, many games and activi- ties and ending with the Pedal Tractor Pull was a real hit with the kids and parents alike. Throughout the af- ternoon the Mundell fami- ly and their guests enter- tained outdoors. Once again the Media Milking Contest attracted much attention when rep- resentatives from the CKLY radio station in Lindsay, Port Perry Star, Scugog Citizen and the Fair Board all tried their hand at milking the quiet cows from Hoogeveen Farm. The Champion choco- late cake baked by Kate Mairs was auctioned to Lindsay Sale Barns while the Champion Cherry Pie baked by Beth McEllis- trum was sold to Linton Farms. President Lawrence VanCamp surprised Sec- retary Joyce Kelly by pre- senting her with a floral arrangement on the occa- sion of her 30th year as Secretary of the fair. The Harness and Sad- dle Shows continued throughout the afternoon as did the excellent beef cattle show. The dairy cat- tle show had not attracted as many entries as the di- rectors had hoped. The Horse Pull had ten teams in total. Keith Hob- den of Lindsay won the light class while Steve Saunders also of Lindsay took the red ribbon in the heavyclass. An excellent crowd at- tended the Beef Barbecue dinner at the United Church. The dance with music by Jerry Archer of KX 96 FM concluded the day in fine form. The 130th annual Blackstock Fair will go into the records as another very successful event. Course back A nine-hole golf course will be a part of the Can- terbury Common project, council learned this week. Original plans for the upscale retirement home on Simcoe Street involved the course, but after a change in management the course was said to not be economically viable. The developers wanted to incorporate a park plan in its place, but council ad- vised them the best and possibly only way to con- tinue with the project was to put the golf course back in the plans. The developers recently completed a review of their project and advised council they would be pro- ceeding as draft plan ap- proved with the inclusion of a golf course. GA ih. Sl SE A BRR a
