"The open space of a golf course is utilized not only by golfers, but is habitat for a variety of wildlife species," explained Marla Briggs, staff ecologist for New York Audubon. "We welcome Oakridge Golf Club's commitment to the environment and to man- aging the golf course with wildlife in mind." By joining the Coopera- tive Sanctuary System, the Oakridge Golt Club will be involved in projects that enhance habitat for wildlife on the golf course and preserve natural re- sources for the benefit of the local community. These projects may in- clude: placing nesting box- es for cavity-nesting birds such as bluebirds and swallows, utilizing inte- grated pest management techniques, conserving water, and maintaining food and cover for wildlife. "The Cooperative Sanc- tuary System benefits both people and wildlife," said Mr. Briggs. "It's a great way for golf courses and environmental organ- izations to work together to become better stewards of land and natural re- sources." The Audubon Society of New York State coordi- nates the program which is sponsored in part by the Royal Canadian golf Asso- ciation. In addition to golf courses, the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System works with indi- vidual homeowners, busi- nesses and schools.
