"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 29, 1995 - 19 Rt EO) EY MN £9 DI LIES WS MA V EY URAL RoorTs Scouts registration's Thursday We had a very lively regatta meeting Sunday discussing all the various changes we could adopt to make our 1996 pro- gram even better. We have a number of new people in our area and I'd sure like to see them out to our meetings. After all the regatta is your organiza- tion. I had a call from Janet Van Camp Sunday and she informed me that registration night for all Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers of Cartwright dis- trict is 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7 at Blackstock United Church. Encourage your youth to take an active part in Scout- ing for I can assure you it pays big dividends. I recall giving a lecture as district head for camping and after the meeting three different engineers I worked with in different indus- trial plants came and thanked me. [ didn't realize they were in- volved in Scouting. It sure helps to develop children in the right manner to be leaders of our soci- ety and community. Each week I write this article as an independent individual. Oh yes I.touch on different sub- jects from time to time and sometimes unintentionally hurt Caesarea Albert Putsey someones feelings or pride. But remember I am an individual, my affiliation with different or- ganizations shouldn't reflect or hurt those organizations be- cause I write for this paper. Last spring I called on the res- idents of Caesarea as an'individ- ual and not as head of any or- ganization to donate two hours per month for six months mean- ing 12 hours per year to help keep our town grass cut on the side of the road and in the ceme- tery due to township and region- al financial restraints. These ef- forts were fruitless with only four volunteers. During our once a year levy to support the regatta one of our volunteers was Sworn at because of the con- dition of the cemetery and wouldn't give a nickel because I was president of the regatta. The second case was a youth who was leading a group in the children's parade and there was an individual taking pictures and she assumed he was a re- porter. She looked through this paper and it didn't appear. Her mother then called another area paper and the reply was "we didn't cover the regatta as your president writes for the other paper." Tell me should I quit writing or sever my relationship with the hall board. The Pine Ridge Garden Club, and the Lake Scu- gog Regatta Association. Think! Tell me. Joke of the Week A friend told me he had his cat neutered. He's still out all night with the other cats, but now its a consultant. Riddle of the Week Multiply 37037 by any single digit number. Then multiply your answer by 3. Your answer will use the same digit number throughout. Try it. Saying of the week It is better to be "defeated on principle than to win on lies. Arther Calwell Young folks busy this summer What the young people are doing this summer! Graham Ingram was 12 years of age on July 7, but he didn't celebrate until August 17 as his friend Jeff was ill. So now the boys-are in fine shape and the ctiraon took place at Family Kartways, and they also took in the Lacrosse game of the Brook- lin Redmen and Brampton. Af- ter a full day, they both enjoyed each others' company with a sleepover at the trailer. Best wishes to Jeff and Graham for many more fun-filled birthdays. Lindsay Ingram spent the week at Huntsville participat- ing in basketball. She attended the Olympic Sports Camp. Four girls, namely Kate Mairs, Heidi Obstfield, Leanne Campbell and Christina Ewart braved the heat with their leaders Laurie and Gloria to hike and camp the Bruce Trail. They are working towards Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Good luck to these young folks. Reading Helpful Resolve to do a little reading every day, if it is but a single sentence. If you gain fifteen minutes a day, it will make it- self felt at the end of the year. (Horace Mann). Nestleton United Church On a cool August 27, at 9 a.m. the Church Service was held at Nestleton United with Robert Nestleton and Carol Mairs the friendly greeters at the door. This was the 12th Sunday after Pente- cost with a smaller attendance on hand. Carol was pianist. Rev. David Shearman was back in the pulpit and so good to see him once again with a "fine mes- sage" for all to take home. Scrip- ture was read by Robert Mairs. Norm and Robert Mairs gath- ered the offering. Service will be held next Sunday at the regular 11:15 a.m. time. Apreal Superintendent and teachers needed for Nestleton Sunday School. If you have some spare time give it a try - you might find you really enjoy either position! Notice Nestleton/Blackstock U.C.W. Service Sept. 10/95 at Nestleton United Church - 10:30 a.m. Guest speaker Norma Soble, U.C.W. President of Bay of Quinte Conference. This is a combined service and a time of fellowship will follow the ser- vice. Be-sure to attend. I believe Blackstock Fair was a tremendous success with a large crowd. Lots to see and do, and a splendid meal in the eve- ning. One lady told me it was the best Fair yet! Where all the ac- tion takes place in the one day! We take our hats off to the workers at Blackstock Fair - they deserve a pat on the back!! Utica Hall There won't be a church ser- vice at the United Church this week, but on Sunday, Septem- ber 10 services will begin, this season starting at 9:30 a.m. This will be Rally Day for the Sunday School. Utica Hall Board will meet on Tuesday, September 5 at the Hall. There will be a miscellaneous community shower for bride-to- be Collette Bertrand on Tues- day, Sept. 5 in Epsom Church.
